And kids love to play games.

1. Instead of pen and paper, buy 2 dice (there are those math dice that goes up to digit 9). Throw and multiply, add or subtract.

2. Use the number cards in a Uno game set. Play a game of snap - show one card each and shout out the answer (whether your game is multiplication, differences or addition). Winner takes the card. (Parents give chance a bit )
(Set of Uno number cards is very versatile, so is poker cards for number games. Be creative)

3. Do up a snake and ladder multiplication game. Answer correctly (to the question in the box your token is on) then can proceed, else miss a turn. Very good for drilling the answers to bigger multiplication equations...have more snakes so the kid gets eaten and forced to revisit the sums to proceed upwards again

Rotate the games and ten minutes daily/a game a day, you will see the difference. End the game and don't replay upon request on the same day so the kid will look forward to the next game day.

Have fun!

jedamum

Reply to How do I teach a P1 kid on multiplication for maths on Tue, 18 Jul 2017 03:25:34 GMT

Any parent looking for Maths Tutor?

Please contact me!

But during the learning process, there can be ways to help the facts stick. I can't remember how my husband helped my daughter when she was having a lot of problems learning the multiplication tables. I'll ask him (and her) and post again later.

sharonkhoo

Reply to How do I teach a P1 kid on multiplication for maths on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 00:39:24 GMT

in a fun way without memorising.

esp. 6x, 7x, 8x

All you have to do is practice with them using the website. Then get a P1 Chinese assessment book to practice writing hanyu pinyin will do.

Note that Chinese character recognition is much more important than hanyu pinyin. Even if your child is very good in hanyu pinyin, he will still do badly in Chinese if he does not know how to read many Chinese words. You should focus on teaching him to read as many Chinese story books as possible. Learning hanyu pinyin alone is quite useless, especially after the first half of P1.

For multiplication, just use real objects to teach. In P1, children only need to know that multiplication is repeated addition.

tamarind

Reply to How do I teach a P1 kid on multiplication for maths on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 14:10:32 GMT

XYZ1:
[ds is still struggling with his more than and less than concepts

Hi, you might want to check out this thread.
