After seeing the video, I want to be a kid again and attend a school in Finland.

I liked it when the teacher said 'I'm their school mother'. I heard of a similar concept from my european colleague who said that they have the same teacher for their entire primary years and they are share a close relationship with their teacher.
Here we are struggling with just 2 languages and there there are learning as much as four languages stress-free.
And I also like that they do not have any streaming which the speaker says helps the children to accept diversity. True.

But I must say that their system is completely on the opposite side of the spectrum from the system here. Adopting only one or two of their ideas will not work in this competitive result driven system. If we revamp, we must embrace their system in entirety; which I think will be wishful thinking.
Nevertheless it is good to know that a non-competitive system can be equally successfull. :celebrate:

tisha

Reply to Complain too much homeowrk! on Wed, 13 Apr 2011 02:47:18 GMT

NB:
DS's class home work reduced the past 2 weeks, apparently some parents complained too stress for their P6! If they do not understand the work, they are only repeating their mistakes over and over again. Yes, it's the matter of quality, not quantity as it does not represent anything nor is it meaningful. I personally do not feel it's practical as well.

Rest is also very important for the children too, adults as well. Agree?

I also have a child in P6 this year. Besides staying back in school for the daily supplementary classes and CCA till evening (compulsory  ), the children are also given some homework and projects to do as well. If they are able to get onto their bed by 10pm, I would say it is a blessing for that day. I ever ask my child what they do for the sup classes and she said sometimes the teacher will continue the lessons which they are not able to finish during the class and to do some work. I was thinking of asking her to stop attending the sup classes when she told me that :\"but sometimes the teacher will teach us something new too, although not everytime.\"

Huh well, guess mine dare not quit from the class for fear of her teacher. Sigh. So it is also quite difficult to get them to attend tuition or getting a tutor for them because of their 'busy' schedule. roll:

I, for one, am looking for a tutor for my child because mine is having some problems with some of her subjects, so she really needs help but it's a headache to find one that can fit into our schedule as I do not want to over-exhaust my child. Even if I managed to find one, it would only be once a week. Impossible to have it twice a week and I do not wish to jeopardize her only Sunday meant for her to rest, relax and enjoy.

I cannot imagine myself after a day of exhaustion (schooling), there are still a number of homework and projects to be done with some English and Chinese spelling to learn too.

We, as the adults may not be able to take it, not to mention the children. They are both physically and mentally drained! This also explains why some children are having mood swings (very easily), not just because of their raging hormones but the stress from school work and PSLE too. :frustrated: :heartbroken: :

High time to revamp our education system or our mindset? How nice it is if we can follow the Finland's.
