Usually the trading volume for pref shares is low. This is another concern when buying pref shares.

Market price of the pref shares ended at $103/shr today. If you want to buy some more, take note that the current yield will be less than 6% because the market price is higher than the face value.

Hi Dolphinsiah, there was a statement from Hyflux that those who applied for the minimum lot of 100 shares will get only 30 shares ($100/shr x30 shrs = $3000). Hence they returned to you only 7K.

How old are your kids? 5-10 yrs I classify as medium term, so certain equities may not be suitable as equities are longer-term.

For 5-10 yrs, you may have to consider more conservative investments like bonds and some insurers offer capital guaranteed plans.

Mine is similar in the sense that instead of letting $$ lying idle in the banks, let it work harder by giving me some dividends.

May not be certain..thats the risk you're taking by buying their pref shares.
You'll have to judge whether the 6% they're offering is worth the risk.

They have water treatment projects ongoing in several arab countries.
I recalled that they were affected by the ongoing war in Libya.

Hyflux's risk of not getting paid by their overseas water plants customers is the same whether is pref or ordinary shares, right ?

In my humble opinion, this issue may not be suitable for you. I'll classify it closer to high risk and this pref share is a perpetual issue. Hyflux may choose never to redeem and you'll have to find a secondary buyer on the market if you want to cash out after 8 yrs.

If the company do well in future, the ordinary shareholders can get higher dividends plus appreciation in the share price. Preference shareholders will get just the fixed rate of 6% (or 8% if it doesn't get redeemed after 7 years). The preference shareholders don't get to participate in the upside at all. Really depends on your view of the company's prospects. If you're optimistic, go for the ordinary shares.

When you say top up, you mean buying more of the ordinary shares already listed on SGX?

I know they pay dividends on their ordinary shares, but not too sure what is the current dividend yield.

In terms of liquidation in case hyflux goes belly up, their pref shares are higher priority in terms of getting back something vs their ordinary shares.

You'll have to think abt whats the proportion of hyflux in your overall investment portfolio. Are you overinvested in this company?
