Without HMT though, you won’t have the 2 additional bonus points. If he has 3rd language, then it’s fine. Otherwise, it’ll be difficult for him to enter HCI and RI and even VJC. This is something my friend who does MT is lamenting right now. It is still possible to enter HCI and RI without HMT, but it’ll be through appeal and that’s another troublesome process.

The school exams will only either be HMT or MT standard. For my school, we will take the O level MT paper at the end of sec 3. Therefore, sec 3 mid year we’ll do MT paper but end of year we’ll do HMT paper.

my son also in sec 2 and take HMT and went for tuition. He gets c5/c6 range He dun like chinese, so tuition to me is to sustain not to improve.

I am thinking of opting him out to normal chinese liao..

Why I thot of letting him to hv HMT is bec I intend to save him the 2 years in JC on chinese.

One thing i need to confirm: in sec school currently do utake both paper HMT and normal chinses or u only take HMT paper?

Yes, you can count MT as R5 provided you do not use HMT for L1.

My school does not allow students who do not do well in MT to take HMT in sec 4 but such cases have been rare in my school. Best to check with the school.

Your son will have to sit for his MT O level exams in Sec 3 and continue to take his school's HMT exam in Sec 3. If he scores an A for his MT at O levels, he will be allowed to take his HMT O levels at Sec 4. If he passes HMT O levels, he will be exempt from MT for A levels.

My school only allows HMT students to take MT in the end of the year in sec 3 so it depends on the school. As for school exams, again it depends on the school. My sec 3 mid year exam was MT standard but end of year exam was HMT standard.

For students doing HMT, they have 3 chance to sit for MT O level. For your son's case, he can
1st try: end of Sec 3 (oct / nov 2012)
2nd try: mid of Sec 4 (may / jun 2013)
3rd try: end of Sec 3 (oct / nov 2013)

If he is satisfy with his grade in the 1st try, he can choose not to sit for 2nd try and 3rd try.

You can check with the school for more info.

The going was initially tough during sec 1 after i successfully transferred him from a band 3 school to his current band 1 school. (was band 1 three years ago)

It is only recently when one of his close friend (1st in his sec 3 cohort) told him that he will not be possible to go to a top JC without the 2 (HCL) bonus points that he get worried about that. Thanks.

So no, they prefer students who use bonus points instead of raw score. Next, if there are too many people with the same score, for example 3 nett, and the cut off for HCI is 3, that is when they look into individual subjects. I have always thought that people with A1 English or better Englsih grades are given priority, since many of those 3 pointers in HCI or RI have A1 English. But apparently not. Anyway, point is that subjects outside of L1R5 are taken into consideration. So L1R5 is not the be all and end all. Then if there are many people with the same grades for every single subject and same L1R5, placement of school will be by random, so luck is also factored in.

Depends on the school I guess. My school does try to allow every student to take HMT. However, some people really cannot cope, so it isn't really beneficial either, since if they fail, there will also be no bonus points and no exemption from MT in JC. Might as well just do MT so that they don't feel demoralised and don't feel that they are wasting time doing something they can't do anyway.

Don't know will the school allow him to take HCL in sec 3. I will try to talk to his CL teacher. (Do u know if any school allow this?) So far, he did quite well in his other subjects. Just a note that students who intend to take HCL at O levels in Sec 4 must first have scored an A in O level CL in Sec 3 before they're allowed to take HCL.
