My boy is in primary 3 and based on his CA1 results, I am expecting his performance to drop from a a high Band 1 (for the past 2 yrs) to a border-line Band 2 and Band 1 because of new composition component he has this year. And because we are unable to find a suitable time slot and location for the regular recommended creative writing centres (Mindstretcher, TAS etc), we are now looking at alternative small group tuition or lesser-known centres that can meet our needs (Bukit Batok area).

How effective is the tutor able to juggle the different learning abilities of students in the same tuition group? Anyone tried this type of arrangement? What is the market rate for this type of arrangement if the tutor is an ex-teacher?

The bondage is good and this in turn had a good effect on my results. In my JC years, my mother got me private tutors, and I remembered having to run back into my room for a while just to roll around in bed for a short break or hide in my toilet longer so I can delay more time. Private tutors on the contrary was boring and more stressful, which did not do good for my results. I had no friends to discuss my problems when I did not know how to solve the question and I was expected to finish all the assignments without any doubts after the tuition classes. Now that I have a child of my own, I did not hesitate to sign her up for group tuition. Now my daughter is in a class with a lady tutor who has her lessons in her SOHO, up to only 6 buddies in the class. She specialises in pre-school and primary school education, with her own unique way of making the children bond with her, thus listening attentively when she teaches. I’ve asked my child whenever she comes back from her classes and she’s always smiling and telling me the fun she had and on top of that the things she learnt. Now that she is in primary school, she is way ahead of her classmates in her English, Maths and Chinese and she tells me the classes in school are too easy. Do take note it is not easy booking this tutor as her timeslots are quite limited as her classes are usually quite fully booked. I had to book her beginning 2 years ago when my child was 5 and only got a reply about 3 months after. She doesn’t start classes until she has enough students as she doesn’t charge a lot for her tuition (compared to the tuition classes in centers). PM me if you want to have her contacts. All the best everyone!

Last week I caught a boy give up totally on Passage 3 of Listening Compre when his eyes was reading Passage 4 Questions when Passage 3 was playing on the radio. Because I only have max 5 in a class. I actually calculate individual students' Potential Marks loss (based on individual student's standard) per Paper to show them what their Personal Best should have been. With lesser pupils, we can ink more details on their compositions.

I started off teaching one-to-one tuition. As the time is limited to 1.5-4hrs a week, Compo writing and Full exam paper need to be issued as homework and students often don't complete and training wasn't as efficient. One-to-one is good for guiding, but not for Battle Training. Group is more competitive and much more structured.

mylulaoshi

Reply to Effectiveness of Small Group Tuition on Tue, 07 Mar 2017 03:57:50 GMT

Hello! He was failing his chemistry and mathematics very badly as his class in school very fast so he cannot catch up. I found out about apt tuition lab from this forum and decided to let my son try. Both the chemistry and mathematics teachers were very patient with him and their class size very small so very good for my son. In the end he went from E8 to A2 for both subjects. Even though not A1 but it’s still a very big improvement so both of us very happy. highly reccommend this tuition centre in serangoon.

I was like :slapshead: . and of course also because he scored full marks for today's spelling (i didn't know they have spelling) even though it was his first lesson. the teacher praised that his 1st piece of work is good and kept it while she returned the compos to the rest of the class. my ds1 compo is that good meh? having coach him for SA1 compo, I think cc standard is not high (or is my expectations too high? :scratchhead: ). have looked through the compo pictures that they will be doing for next few lessons and found that the picture compo are not those 'common' type. good and bad. good is that it trains my ds1 to write uncommon stuff and also he needs to analyse the picture carefully to ensure that what he intepreted is not far off from the picture. since june holidays coming up, maybe will try proteach for 1-2 months to compare.
off topic liao....

jedamum

Reply to Effectiveness of Small Group Tuition on Tue, 10 May 2011 04:23:55 GMT

Hey,

No problemo man! At that time, the teachers of that centre were not friendly, students were only given topics to write in class and marked, no writing techniques taught, and my son was scolded (\"why you have so many questions?\" said the teacher  ) for asking questions in class.

jedamum

Reply to Effectiveness of Small Group Tuition on Tue, 03 May 2011 01:27:38 GMT

jedamum:
I am expecting his performance to drop from a a high Band 1 (for the past 2 yrs) to a border-line Band 2 and Band 1 because of new composition component he has this year.

If your ds is relatively okay wth paper 2, just need to brush up compo, you might want to consider nearby CC or RC?
