Some plans have free child cover if both parents are insured on the same plan, and the coverage is about 25% of the sum assured instead of the full sum assured.

However, there are babies/kids plans that are catered to that age group, and have additional features like childcare / school reimbursement for the time that the kid is sick at home.

So really depends on what you are looking for. So far PA Star is quite affordable and comprehensive. I work as a relationship manager dealing with clients’ wealth, but I also have access to insurance across most insurance companies in Singapore so probably I can share a few tips:

1) Shield plans and accident plans are not the same. Shield plans allows you to claim your bills upon hospitalization (include pre and post, but limited to certain duration) Accident plans are more of a conditional and status basis. If you lost an arm, eyes or burnt, for example, you can receive payout accordingly.

2) Throughout the years, companies try to be competitive and started to include abit of another product, meaning accident plans covering dengue, food posioning. Some fire insurance also covers dengue as well. But please remember what the plan is for, as the default type. You shouldn’t replace one for another despite certain overlapping (if you were to do comparison, the amount that you can claim usually is lower if its an additional benefit). PA as a rider is cheaper, but the claim may be lower and restricted as well

3) For accident plans can range from Life insurers AIA, Prudential, G.E., Manulife, Tokio Marine, AXA etc, to specialised General Insurers like Tenet, AIG, ACE, etc. The cost of premiums are affected by admin charges (including comms) and others. But the main factor will be their amount of clients. If they have alot of pool of people to tap into, they can leverage to reduce their cost and pay for someone else’ coverage. But if you have so many clients under you, you will expect more claims. If your company don’t grow fast enough and develop good systems, you often can issue out claims in months than in weeks.

4) Different companies have different marketing and benefits to compete against each other. But the factor you should consider will be the PROTECTION AMOUNT, HOW FAST YOU CAN CLAIM and UNDERWRITING CRITERIAS. Technically all companies follow a certain community of underwriting but apparently from different cases, you always hear complains about their claim being rejected or reduced amount.

5) Different shield plans also have different benefits. Aviva covers free coverage for children, while NTUC currently has the cheapest premium to sum insured claim. Most importantly, make sure that you have integrated shield plan, so that you are covered both coinsurance and deductibles (specific riders), if not you will end up paying for your bills despite having a shield plan.

6) People often feels that insurance is a waste of money, that its a sunk cost. but honestly, if one is ever going to the hospital or accident (touch wood), the bills might exceed the cost that you pay for 10 years. "As with many other life necessities, it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it"

I hope my sharing has been useful. Peace!
