Did you get a similar briefing?

About the Peter and Jane/Ladybird series, don’t go by P1 standard first, especially if you think your girl is a weak reader. My girl is a strong reader for English (and weak for Chinese) so she may be above average for a P1 when it comes to this series. Just bring your girl to Popular and choose a level you think she is at, and ask her to read on the spot for you. Then, based on her reading, you either move up or down the level or stay put, if you’re on target.

They use the STELLAR. Does your girl's sch use STELLAR too? They have Eng silent reading every day from Tue-Fri. (Mon is for Mother Tongue.)

My DD reads rather well in Eng but she is quite picky with reference to the illustrations and how interesting the story is. She prefers stories that are funny so I try to avoid preachy stories.

(Anyway, stories with morals at the end usually bore me too. I feel that sometimes, the author sacrifices the story just to have a moral at the end. So if anyone here can recommend an interesting \"moral/teach good habits\" story with a good plot and nice ending, I'll be very grateful.)

My DD likes the following:
1. Charlie and Lola stories by Lauren Child
2. Little Princess stories by Tony Ross
3. Stories with funny or beautiful illustrations
4. Not so famous fairy tales/myths
5. Famous fairy tales with a twist/different ending
6. Dr. Seuss books

I'll go home and look at her mini library and post some titles here tonight.
Off hand, I can only remember \"The Day I Swapped My Father for Two Goldfish\" by Neil Gaiman. We got ours at Kinokuniya.
http://www.amazon.com/Day-Swapped-Dad-Two-Goldfish/dp/1565041992
(Our copy has a different cover.)

schellen

Reply to P1-Readings on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 03:17:43 GMT

First time i’m hearing no textbook for English in P1.

How do the teachers teach English grammar and
stuff to the children in class?
