DD’s teacher recently told us she could have gotten higher marks if she had done better in those areas(!) and DH told her that’s what he’s been telling tutors and they never listened.

It’s great that you can speak the language. Perhaps your DS can do Foundation, which focuses on the spoken. But this depends on your school’s resources.

Mine don’t fall into either and the school principal doesn’t want to support our application. All applications must be submitted via school so we’re stuck.

I find it strange that parents are the only ones who understand this predicament. Would be good for MTL to become a flexible subject, one that’s taught to every child but with no exams. Only those who have a real interest in it should study it more seriously, but the rest can be taught things like conversational situations, culture, heritage, and so forth – in a more relaxed manner.

I know of folks who have migrated cos they can’t cope with Tamil.

I think for any MTL it is especially hard for the kids when parents don’t speak it. So can imagine the amount of effort that the child (and parents) needs to put in to manage the subject in school.

I don’t know what are the MT exemption criteria. But if the parents don’t speak the language at all then it does not make sense that it becomes the child’s MTL. I wonder if there is any way of appealing. Because at the end of the day , sadly enough, MTL results affect the PSLE results and secondly, MTL continues to be a key subject in sec school.

Train her with the common words ( oli verupadu and vocab) which appear again and again in the practise and test papers.concentrate on compo writing. you have few common sentences which can suit almost all the compos. she can memorise or practise writing those sentences so that she can write atleast a few sentences without any mistake. for oral try to discuss pictures with her. Usually the children will get repeated situations for exams. SO pracitising can make her better in this area. One of my student from english speaking family, with this kind of practise managed to score about 50% in p3, p4 and p5. This year in PSLE (he said the paper was very tough) he got B for Tamil. So don't lose heart. your DD will get good score in PSLE.

wonder mom

Reply to All About Learning Tamil on Thu, 28 Nov 2013 09:15:54 GMT

My DD failed her Tamil despite twice-weekly tutoring.
