Sorry to say that but I think the maid should be keeping an eye on him while the mum is out. Safety of the child is more important than household chores. When I need to visit the bathroom, I even bring my kids in when they were toddlers.

Let me share two examples:
My SIL's nephew was almost drowned cos her MIL thought the maid was keeping an eye on him while the maid thought her MIL was doing it. The 15 month old toddler somehow made his way to the fish pond outside their semi-D. Fortunately, when they managed to find and fish him out of the pond, they managed to revive him.
There was once when DS1 was 2 years old and I brought him to FIL shop which was facing a main road. For no reason, he suddenly just dashed out of the shop but fortunately, instead of running into the main road, he turned and ran along the pavement. I immediately ran and caught him just before he reached the road junction which was about 25m away. :yikes: :yikes:

tutormum

Reply to Boy, 2, dies after being hit by mum's car on Wed, 15 Jun 2011 08:47:20 GMT

It is indeed a tragedy for the family!

Even in a landed house, there is a gate to the compound and there should be either another gate or a door to the house. That should be locked and not opened so that the kid will only get out when they have asked for permission. I believe this is a case whereby the inner house door / gate is opened and the kids can run in and out of the house freely, but within the compound. When there is a car porch within the compound, then there is danger in this case.
