She started when she was just 18mths old. We chose this centre as it was very new and clean. The most important reason was actually the low teacher:child ratio. The principal and school manager are also very helpful and detailed in explaining their centre's syllables when we first went there. The vibes we got from the school on our first meeting were good as compared to the other centres we viewed and hence our decision to place our daughter there.

During the initiation period, the centre was quite considerate as they allowed parents to stay with their kids for as long as 3 days. The teachers that my daughter had so far have been very sincere and committed. I do interact with the other levels teachers too and I must say it's been good impression so far.

Syllables are probably similar to most childcare centres (Counting, colours, craft, water play, young chef etc) but one thing that stands out to me is the assembly time. All the students have to sing the national anthem, the pledge in 3 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES (English, Chinese & Malay), followed by the school song which many of my other friends' children didn't do so in their schools. Our daughter could actually sing the anthem & say the pledge after only a few mths and we give credit to the school. In addition, Malay lessons are included from N1 onwards. My husband and I had a pleasant surprise when our daughter recited the pledge in Malay for us (maybe half was mumbled :P) just after 2-3mths of learning it. I personally think that it's wise to learn Malay living in a multi racial society like singapore. Likewise, non Chinese students also have to learn Mandarin in this centre.

I can't comment much about what thetinyseed has written about the K1/2 syllables as firstly, it's a different branch and secondly, my daughter has yet to reach that level. However, till date, we are still rather satisfied with what the centre has provided for my daughter & most importantly, she's happy. I guess it boils down to how parents feel about the school generally as well as if their kids enjoy attending lessons there.

Just my two cents worth Hope that helps for you, janeys!

Tulip_mummy

Reply to Treasure Box Child Development Centre on Thu, 11 Apr 2013 12:20:02 GMT

janeys:
Hi! I stay in Serangoon and works near Katong so I visited both centres recently.

The one at Parkway is very new and clean which is a plus point cos hygiene is definitely a priority.I spoke with the lady boss and I am impressed by her passion for child education. She explained in details about the curriculum and activities the children go through and I am happy with the low child - teacher ratio, so the children will get more attention, and lesser stress on the teachers too.

The one at Parry is not as new but can see they did some reno and paint, they have quite a outdoor play area and when I visited, I saw the children were having fun with water play. Tho the place is not new, it is still quite clean and tidy with all the play things nicely placed.

I plan to enroll my son when he is 2 years old but have not decided which branch yet but was told the Parry branch may be on the waiting list.

jykoh82

Reply to Treasure Box Child Development Centre on Fri, 25 Jan 2013 08:13:53 GMT

Hi! During the time he was there, we had a lot of mixed feelings, and I must admit it was mostly quite uncomfortable.

Since last year, a lot of the "better" teachers have left the centre, which is quite unfortunate. I find the "newer" ones not as spontaneous in their caring actions towards the children, especially the younger ones. Many time, they even raise their voices at the little tots. So heartache, even if not my own kids!

Teaching wise, not terribly impressive. How to be, when the teachers and principal speak in awful English. My boy even said the teachers do not know and do not teach them phonics! So, during all that time, my boy did not learn how to read. I realised this rather late, about 6 months before he was to enrol into P1.

There was little, if any remediation for slow learners, and reports always came back glowing, like my child was doing so well. I would rather the school find out and tell me if there was a problem with my child, so that I can get intervention soon, rather than have "excellent" reports all the time, which mean nothing.

I am very disappointed with the school, and I wished i had taken a more active role in my child’s education then, so he would not have so much difficulty now.

At the end of K2, my boy’s reading level was way below his age group for English, and couldn’t read nor write most of the Chinese characters he had so-called learned while at school. I don’t know why the teachers did not tell us anything.

Thus more time for u and ur child to rest.

What u mean by open door policy?

Usually if your kid just started off with the school, they will allow parents to be there for at least 3 days. They dun really restrict if u stay with ur kid for more than that, but as parents, we also need to understand that the child need to adapt himself with the environment. They loved the school and the teachers there. They have interesting curriculum which is what attracted me in the first place, and ample space for children to play. I always look forward to the Parents-Teachers Meeting and the annual school concert too.

About 2 years ago, my dad was hospitalised for a major colon operation. He developed alot of complications at that and stayed in the hospital for over 3 months. During that difficult period, I’ve gained alot of support from the principal & the teachers from Treasure Box Parry. They actually stopped their dinner service to the kids for nearly a year, but upon knowing my situation that I need to run to the hospital everyday after work, I could not take care of my kids’ dinner, the principal make an exception to provide dinner service for my 2 kids and charge me a very minimum sum. I’ve never forgot that period and still very grateful to them until this day.

I guess when considering which childcare centre to put ur child to, curriculum, methods of teaching and environment are crucial factors. But put aside these factors, I strongly recommend this childcare centre becos I knew at difficult times, they are ready to be there and will try their best to provide support to the parents.
