My 9yo who can speak/understand mandarin don't even watch Mandarin News cos it is so difficult to understand spoken mandarin if the foundation is not good.
Have television, watch cartoons such as sesame street. and as i recommended in the first page, get the parent to go to NLB to borrow dvds (free!). all these dvds have subtitle option (eg Super Why, Word World). listen and look at the words at the same time. for a start.
if the P1's foundation is really weak, try to source for the following (i found it in bukit batok library a few months back; can also be found in Youtube but full version):-
http://newarrivals.nlb.gov.sg/itemdetail.aspx?bid=13867141
http://newarrivals.nlb.gov.sg/itemdetail.aspx?bid=13867142
http://newarrivals.nlb.gov.sg/itemdetail.aspx?bid=13867146
http://newarrivals.nlb.gov.sg/itemdetail.aspx?bid=13867145
http://newarrivals.nlb.gov.sg/itemdetail.aspx?bid=13867145
http://newarrivals.nlb.gov.sg/itemdetail.aspx?bid=13867143
not only have the video singalong, there is a little booklet inside that i 'read' along with my 5yo. quite good for preschoolers too.
youtube eg.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltkkfk8YWqY&feature=relmfu

jedamum

Reply to How to teach a child to read sentences? on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 01:21:38 GMT

bezzlay:
This boy's family is not well-off so I need to know more primitive ways of getting him read more independently.

There is no need to be well-off to be able to learn. If yes, I understand the situation.

Of course the best way to teach a child is to let him or her mimic the parents’ way of speaking. But I guess cartoons and computer-aided help are alternatives.

Even we locals struggle with teaching our children spoken English as many of us speak Singlish. My kids are always asking "Izzit?" just like my wife.

So unless we discipline ourselves and speak English properly (as properly as we can), our children will simply follow suit and be half-baked English speakers.

I have got some ideas to recommend the mum. Will probably ask her to let him watch more english cartoons, go library to borrow books and dvd and played the computer games there. And most important of all the child needs to have a right attitude in learning.

The child is P1.
