As I look at my calendar entry for tonight’s Seventh Month dinner in the Paya Lebar division of Aljunied GRC, I grow a little wistful. The last such dinner I was scheduled to attend took place last week, a few weeks after the organizers called to let me know that they could no longer have me show up at the event as they had originally hoped.

The organizers as in previous years had planned to hold the festivities on a hard court in the HDB estate, but this year were told by the Paya Lebar CCC (Citizens’ Consultative Committee under the People’s Association) that, as a condition for receiving CCC approval to use the venue, they may no longer invite their MP to the event. Future approvals will be withheld from errant organizers. The organizers were profusely apologetic.

It pains me that they felt so embarrassed to pass me the news. Regrettably, this is not the first time it has happened since I was elected. See photos of an invitation and retraction from another distraught organizer who applied to use a different venue in the same ward.

This is the month of many festivities including National Day, a day of our progressive nationhood. Many residents talk to me about the events they are organizing in the neighborhood: some of them wish to invite me to join them, others don’t see the need to. That is all fine by me … there is really no call to force our residents into a quandary over whom they may invite as guests to their own events.

This is how you ensure that the 40% who did not vote for the ruling party continues to vote for any party OTHER than the ruling party. And for fair-minded voters who voted the ruling party to consider voting someone else. Good job, People's Association!

(Just to add, PA's CEO is Yam Ah Mee, everyone's favourite RO. Doesn't that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside now?)

ST Forum: Why opposition MPs can't be advisers to grassroots bodies

…The mission of the People's Association (PA) and its grassroots organisations (GROs) is to bond the community and connect people with the Government. PA and its GROs serve all residents regardless of their political affiliations in fulfilling their role.
Grassroots advisers are appointed by PA, a statutory board. Besides connecting people to people, grassroots advisers are required to help the Government connect with people and help promote government policies and programmes such as anti-dengue and active ageing.

Hence, the Government has to appoint grassroots advisers who support its programmes and can play this role well. Opposition MPs cannot be expected to do this and thus cannot become advisers to GROs.

When WP do or say something, they always back it with facts, reports, newspaper clips etc… not just "say say".

But when MIW do or say something… a lot of times they have nothing to back them up…

Like the penny case… says it’s to capture the moment but no pictures to show…

And, for the "allegations" against "steal your Eggs", pple up up newspapers cuttings, official reports etc… to support their point. Except some issues like the deferment case which is difficult for any one to find "reports".

However, for this case, the someone just say "it is false" allegations without any supporting facts/documents. When he can do is to put out details on what is the vocation, nature of duty etc… and let pple judge for themselves whether the allegations hold ground or not (Like the way WP put up the few pages long article). But did he?.. or just say say only…

Not sure how long ago that is, but if the tabloids were told of the story, they may have made a hooha big enough to have something done.
I don't know.
We as young subalterns dealt with such cases as they were given to us, n I never saw this case again before I left NS.
This was at a time when d recruit's allowance was $90 n MINDEF has a policy of not reporting military incidents in the MSM.
