They can be had for about a thousand or so now. The good thing with Olympus is that their lens are comparatively cheaper than Nikon and Canon glass. Get the E520. It’s light in weight and good enough for most situations.

In a camera system, the lens costs quite a bit. Don’t spend too much money on the body because they will get obsolete in about 2 years time. The lens, on the other hand, will last a lifetime, if taken care of properly.

The alternative is to get a 2nd hand Canon body. There is really not much difference between a last generation model and current generation if the lighting is good.

What you pay for in latest generation model is better low light pics, faster speed, higher resolution LCD display, faster focusing.

You don’t really need all that when you’re just starting out. Don’t get caught up with the hardware. What matters is to train the eye to look for good composition and to know the camera well. Photoshop is also an important skill to master. Most photographs these days are photoshop. Any photographer worth his salt has to know photoshop skills. The software is not cheap.

Again, don’t spend too much money on the camera body, spend more on good lenses. The John 3:16 shop in Funan is well known for their service, but due to the crowded store, you don’t get their time and attention. Best go when there are less people. However, John 3:16 is not well known for their prices. They are normally about 20% more than the cheaper stores. Alan Photo in Sim Lim is a good store for pricing. MS Color too and TK Photo.

Frankly $2,500 for a camera system for a person starting out in this area is too much. Once you factor in the flash, tripod, lenses, filters, spare batteries, memory cards, dry cabinet, camera bag it will go to about $3,500 to $4,500. A good camera bag will set you back by a few hundred dollars.
Keep your cost low on the camera body, aim for $1,000. The camera body is the first piece of gear to go obsolete in as fast as a year. When your child is good enough to earn money from photography, then splurge on a better body. By then, he will probably splurge on a better lens, which will cost upwards of $1,000.

Don’t be concerned in getting a 2nd hand camera. You will be able to resell a used Camera for close to what you bought in the first place. On the other hand, if you buy first hand, you will lose about 20% to 30% of your investment when you sell it off.

Tell your kid not to get too hung up on the hardware. It’s the person behind the camera that makes a good photograph, not the camera. You can motivate him by telling him you will give him the EOS 7D when he wins his first photographic competition, in the meantime, stick with a $1000 alternative.

Another low cost option is to go with a mirrorless camera. The Panasonic, Olympus brands have the micro four thirds camera that uses interchangeable lens. The other system is the Sony NEX camera. Both systems have full manual controls and takes just as good a photograph as any entry level DSLR. The only caveat is that the focusing is just a tad slower and you’ve to compose using the LCD display, which could be a problem in bright sunlight.

My only experience was when I wanted to get a spare original Mfr battery for my cam, I almost bought from a shop in Peninsula who quoted me SGD80 for the battery. As their stock was out, I walked back to Funan and went into John 3:16. The first quote John 3:16 gave me was SGD65 for the original battery which is a good SGD15 bucks cheaper then the shop at Peninsula...

Anyway I am using a Nikon D7000 and loving it... Your son dun wanna consider Nikon?

Re your question on dry box... If he uses his camera very often i.e. will operate the camera maybe at least weekly, think he can still do without. I have a friend who carries his camera around all the time and he does not use a dry box as his camera is almost always ON. If he is like me due to time constraints I may touch my camera once in a few weeks type, may be better to consider a dry box. I bought a digital dry cabinet to store my camera body and a few lens... May be a worthwhile investment (for the dry cabinet) since you are already spending thousands on the camera.

Maybe you can check out this thread...
