He had been learning Mandarin in preschool and is struggling to understand and speak Tamil. We do not speak Tamil at home at all as my husband can't speak it. I realized that my son is able to identify tamil alphabets and generally is good at written Tamil (thanks to my drilling i suppose :P) however, he cannot speak or understand Tamil as we do not use it at home at all! :S

Thus I just started a FB group for like minded mothers/parents so we can meet up with our kids and conduct activities in Tamil together. That way, our kids can be exposed to the language in a fun way!

A little about me:
My background has been in social work and as an educator. Currently, I am a freelance educator. In my journey as a social worker, I have had experience conducting play therapy with young children ages 3-8 years. My intent in starting this group is to use art, dance, songs, drama, stories and many other creative ways to engage our kids so they experience Tamil positively, enjoy themselves and start understanding the language! if you have ideas that has worked, lets share and learn together!

Disclaimer: my Tamil is not good but I do have the basics for learning to appreciate the language and hope to pass that on to kids so that we can learn together! 😊

If you would like to join me in this group, the link is:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/funwithtamil

Hoping to connect with those in the same situation as me!

Shona2

Reply to Q&A - P1 Tamil on Mon, 31 Oct 2016 11:49:43 GMT

Any one knows, what they give for "Tamil writing task" exam after the theory exams for p1 in SA2? Don’t give up on your kids. At least the current PSLE system allows for you not to do so well in one subject with the T score, if you do very well in the other subjects. But the new system doesn’t. You have to score well individually in all subjects with the new points system. That is my main worry. I am still sourcing for a good Tamil tutor for him.

However, since we are Indians (I am Tamil and DH is Malyalee), I chose Tamil as my kids’ MTL because it says mother tongue and Tamil is supposed to be mine. DD is in S1 now and DS in in P5 and both have been struggling with the language since they were in P1. We had tuition for them, private and group, but grades never improved.

It seems that tuition is not the answer. The only solution seems to be, as the school teachers say, is for the people at home to converse with the child in Tamil. Since you can speak and read Tamil, and I presume write it as well, I suggest you continue with what you have been doing. You could also try designating one person in your home who converses only in Tamil with your child - this would force him to continue the conversation in Tamil. Or setting aside a period of time each day when everyone in your home speaks only in Tamil to each other – you could start with short periods of time, like maybe 5 or 10 minutes, then build up to longer.

These are things I wish I could have done but Tamil is an alien language to me. Have told this to all the school teachers but they don’t seem to care and just continue pushing the blame to us when they fail tests and exams. I hope this will give you some encouragement that there are other children who are doing worse than your child.

Although he can understand some simple Tamil, he refuses to speak it. I have been concentrating in his English as he was not able to read independently. But now his English is showing good improvement and I realize he may not cope with Tamil in P1. He has been going for Tamil group tuition since K1 with very little improvement in his spoken Tamil. He can recognize a few Tamil letters. I am going to try the songs and reading of books suggested. I also bought the Tamil murasu on Mondays ( for the mannavar murasu). The only problem is that I need to translate to him in English after reading in Tamil because he can’t understand. I desperately need some help and advise. What I want to know is how to make his vocabulary and spoken Tamil better. Does anyone know a private tutor who can help?

Yeah, that is what i am doing. I watched with her tamil songs and ask her to sing.

She was actually in classical singing class but unfortunately, as other children dropped off, charges for 1 child is very expensive and with no choice i stopped the class. She enjoys it as the tutor come to house to teach but was sad that i need to stop. Classes at SIFA and other centres does not work well for her as it clashes with her other classes as they have fixed time on weekends.

I promised her i would enrol her again when her schedule is less hectic, that way she can enjoy studies and play more.

As for now, i just read tamil books and hope that she would get a good understanding teacher next year.

Hope for the best.

Was sending him to grp tuition for abt a year and a half but stopped as he wasn't learning anything except to write out the tamil letters. Was just a waste of time & money. Then i tried coaching him at home whenever i could; he enjoyed it more. I sang to him nursery tamil rhymes, read him short tamil stories and we took an effort to speak more of the language at home. Then we realised learning starts at home and parents are the best teachers. I also bought tamil alphabetical chart and pasted it on the wall where he could see.

This yr, we were very worried as well for his P1 tamil but luckily the teacher was understanding and started slowly without affecting his confidence or interest in tamil. Exposure to tamil songs, music really helps alot. He started singing songs we were interested in. Then i started showing his songs on youtube and thanx to this medium he won 2nd prize in his sch tamil singing competition and watching it continues till today. I exposed him to old mgr songs, barathiyaar songs and nursery songs from india. Don't worry, your child will slowly pick up the language; don't make it seem as a sch subject; let your child realise how beautiful our language is. Btw, we don't watch tamil movies with him. Once our children gets interested in listening and singing the language, i believe half the battle is won.

All the best wishes to you. Instead, there is holistic assessment. Pupils will be given a variety of tasks be it written, spoken or even performed. And they will be assessed based on their performance for the given task.

Some examples are singing, talking abt particular topics, spelling, listening comprehension, writing, ability to read given words. Singing, talking on given topic are performed in the front of the class. Ability to read words is done 1-1 with the teacher. There is a rubric which the teacher uses to assess the pupil. In my child's sch, it is done with stars ranging from 1 star to 4 stars. Bite-sized tasks given every now & then but pupils are given time to prepare certain tasks like singing & presenting on a topic.

It's quite interesting as it gets the entire family involved esp in the singing & topic presentation. Using stars is also not disencouraging; instead it motivates pupils to aim for 4 stars.

I hope this is useful to you.

PreciousLife

Reply to Q&A - P1 Tamil on Mon, 20 May 2013 07:10:43 GMT

can any parents share with me what will kids be tested in Primary 1
