My children were foreign to Chinese before P1 too, but we wanted something offering more than just drilling, worksheets and exams. We wanted a conducive environment for loving the Chinese language while preserving the local culture and traditions unique to Singapore. The pioneer teachers there if you speak with them are like teachers we can relate to very much. They all speak like the FM95.8 DJs like of accent, unlike mainland mandarin.

My kids now in upp pri, are doing well in normal chinese and one most like will do higher chinese. The other child’s results is eligible too but he is not so interested. They still do not speak mandarin at home, but we can tell their speaking is more accurate than most Singaporean as they are learning from the correct people i.e. teachers in school and huay kuan, vs Singlish. However, I think that you are looking for a place for quick result, the more popular tuition centres would be more suitable for you. But if you are looking at longer terms beyond secondary school, then I believe huay kuan has the right people and environment for the kids.

However there is no test to make sure children has learnt how to use these 好词好句 the following week. Teacher does mark the zuo wen but I am not sure if there is a model essay given.
If you are interested to find out more, can always give them a ring to ask, they are very helpful in my enquiries.
Hopefully parents with children in current zuo wen class can share more with you on the effectiveness as I have yet to enroll my child.
