To clarify, ah teck daughter is taking O Level Music (a 2 year elective subject) and not MEP (a 4 year programme leading to Higher Music in O level exam). The elective is less vigorous than MEP.

Notwithstanding, the logistics concern and being held back / delayed in original school is real. In addition, being an elective, it may / may not help in her overall result. Higher Music (MEP) result is the equivalent of 1 humanity subject and can replace it in the computation of L1R5. O Level Music, however, is an elective and is the equivalent of “other subjects” like food & nutrition, design & technology, PE, etc. If the strategy is to go for a less academically rigorous course to fill up the space, there are probably other options to consider without eating into / wasting traveling time.

That's if your child decides to do music as one of his/her A Level H2 subjects... Eg. Subject combination of 4H2 subjects Phys/Chem/Math/Music .... Or any other combinations with music considered as a \"humanities\" subject. But this combination I cited would be eligible for applying to any course in local universities.

Very in depth programme, son plays erhu, if your kid is good at the instrument it settles half the subject, the rest will be things like theory, music history etc. Sent my kids for some courses that specialise in teaching MEP as well, helped a lot.

My niece tried it for one year in Sec 1. Logistics-wise it is difficult to manage. Sometimes the last period in school may end late. Sometimes the teacher keeps them back for whatever reason. Their mentality is MEP lesson is not as important as their own subject lesson. Then the student is stuck in school can’t argue.

Hard to reach the other school on time for the music lesson. Do bear in mind that MEP also has a lot of theory and music history content. Is she happy to take such theory papers that need memorization? It’s not all performance content. And there’s group concerts etc. It’s not all solo like what she may be used to in piano lessons.[/quote]
