Therefore, finding a new pair of shoes takes a lot of time, trial, and error. I’ve almost run out of options, and was hesitant to order on line just because I knew I’d probably have to return them. As predicted that did happen. And though I didn’t find a shoe to fit, I appreciate the opportunity to give it a try. Everyone sweats at varying degrees. It is fairly common nowadays that more and more people are talking about it and seeking treatment.

Hyperhidrosis is a genetic problem. That means if you have sweaty hands and feet, your offsprings, even the next generation, will likely to have them too. If your sweaty problems are more serious than others, it is good to seek treatment as it can become a hindrance to your daily life routine and affect your social life and self image too.

There is NO CURE for hyperhidrosis. One must accept that fact and live with it.

There are various treatments available. You should visit a dermatologist in National Skin Centre. The doctor will discuss with you the various options to treat you. One is to apply Driclor on your hands and feet and even your underarms every night on dry skin just before you sleep. It is a liquid chemical containing aluminium chloride and alcohol. It can cause skin irritations if you have very sensitive skin. Another better treatment is Iontophorosis. You put your hands into two trays of water connected to a small machine whereby a low electric current is passed through the water. It is a 20-min treatment process to ‘soak’ your hands or feet. Your skin stay dry for an average of 3 days to 3 weeks, depending on individuals. You have to go back for this treatment again once your hands and feet start sweating again as there is no cure for hyperhidrosis. In NSC, they mix a glycol medicine ( a controlled drug in Singapore) in the water that you soak your hands with. Strangely, water does not work in Singapore but it does in the States and other countries. It could be due to the mineral content in the our water or Singapore is simply too humid to begin with. There are side effects to using glycol medicine like having dry throat, headaches etc but these are nothing if Iontophorosis can help curb your excessive sweating. The Iontophorosis machine can be bought from overseas and there are several types available. Just google and find out more for yourself… They are not cheap though.

As a last resort, if all options are not working well for you, you can go for a sympathectomy, a surgery to remove the nerve that sends message messages to your brain for sweating. The surgeon will open a hole near your chest and reach inside your underarm to remove the nerve. It is definitely a very invasive way to stop excessive sweating. Do consider it well before embarking on it. If it is not for a life threatening health issue, I do not see why a person should go under the knife.

Of course, you can try TCM. Even that, the Chinese physician promises nothing as TCM also claims hyperhidrosis is difficult to cure and the process is long. I have heard of successful cases though. One needs to be patient and have faith in the treatment procedures. Most important is to stay upbeat and make the best of what we can.
