In any industry - there are bad customers.. and because tuition is a service industry - the tutors and the tuition centres tend to take it in their stride...

In this thread - let out your frustrations here.... you might feel better ... and maybe other more experience sifu can share how they deal with the situation...

This is for learning...
and of course - if you want to black list the students / parents - I am sure you have every right to do it.... so go ahead...

We once had a student who missed an entire year of school and had a lot of learning difficulties, but the parents did not tell us until after we accepted the student in.


A month of struggling and difficulties in understanding basic concepts later, we spoke to the parents again and then we found out that the student had actually been asked to withdraw from many centres already. I was so miffed, but at the same time quite sad for the kid as well.
Perhaps the solution for such kids is not tuition, but an acceptance that the academic road is not meant for her (at least not now, perhaps when she is more mature) and to think of alternatives to the Singapore educational system?

What I have encountered are mostly irresponsible tutors, especially those below 25 and I noticed that tutors today no longer give or print notes nor provide any form of study materials unlike some in the past.

I see no reason to duplicate what someone professional has done - some of the assessment books available in the market are really very good, as are the notes that come with them. I like using Andrew Er's, Fabian Ng's or Ammiel Wan's books, for instance.

Back in the old days, such good assessment books were simply not available, hence the need for tutors to come up with these notes.

As for \"bad\" students/parents, I have my own share of horror too! My very, very first assignment was marred by a parent who accused me of taking one of her jewellery! I was flabbergasted and refused to step into her house again.

It’s also obvious that many are out to just earn some easy and good pocket money without wanting to put in any effort, only let the tutees do assessments with some explanation and their job is done. Very disappointed that most are irresponsible and uncaring. Really had too many unpleasant experiences with tutors and the agencies.

Yup, but I'm already absorbing some costs myself as I got my friend to help me print notes, worksheets and exam papers for my students. And all these costs are increasing as well.

Yup, but I'm already absorbing some costs myself as I got my friend to help me print notes, worksheets and exam papers for my students. And all these costs are increasing as well.

Haha sometimes I wish I was a full time tutor then I would have sufficient quantity to get them printed from china.

I just got a whole batch of flyers printed from there, the quality is really good and the price is amazingly low. A4 double sized, colour & gloss only cost me like 4cents - shipping and tax included.

To be fair, I think there are both unreasonable tutors and parents/students around. Quite lucky for me, I haven't really encountered very bad tutors.

I've never encountered very bad parents, but I've encountered very bad students. They never completed their assignments because their \"mother gave them permission to play computer games\" not knowing they have unfinished work, refuses to do the questions in class, always tries to negotiate with me for money, gifts or early dismissal in exchange for doing questions, comes to tuition eating ice-cream. They often forget to bring (and finally lose) their books/assignments/stationery, insisting on sleeping and even to the extend of hitting me when i refuse to return him the ball he was throwing around during lesson.

These two brothers' lesson are always a nightmare. I dont know how to tell the parents I dont wish to tutor them anymore, but it seems like the parent decided to call it off first before the expected increase in tuition fees. I still don't know if it is a blessing and I seriously wonder about the future of these children.

Fortunately for me, most of the students and parents I encountered so far were/are reasonable and pretty understanding. Only 1 private O level candidate left a bad taste in my mouth many years ago because of her arrogance and rude demands. However, I still believe if you play nice, they will play nice too.
