Many petrol chemical industries were eagerly sourcing &amp; recruiting aggressively for young, fresh graduates in this field, offering very high pay $. This was the bumper crop year, during the good economical years. <br /><br />then there came a drastic change in our SG economy, sudden downturn recession. Chemical Engineers find it very tough to find jobs in chemiclal products, petrol related industries - so much so that they all switch to relief teaching, because the chemical industries were not recruiting anymore fresh graduates. So they switch to relief teaching in Secondary schools. Some school Vice Principals who interviewed them - were very surprised! They are very good, but commented that was such a waste of their talent.</blockquote></blockquote><br />Not just teachers, phtthp, CEOs of sunset industries start driving taxis - I'm sure you've heard of that.  <br /><br />Singaporeans move with the govt.'s policies and it is still being repeated now, and I don't think it is healthy for a society.  People are not machines that can be programmed to do what is desired by others.  We have feelings and we have a life to live.  We can't just find ourselves redundant one day, and stop living.  Our pursuits may not always be in line with the country's economic growth - well, lucky if it is.<br /><br />Personally, I think it is still best to pursue one's passion - inspiration from Steve Jobs (and many successful people) because it is only then that you can carry on when faced with adversities and tough times, to go through the ups and downs.  When one is passionate enough, buds will start to grow. I think they might have more prospects in Australia if they are keen to pursue it.  Otherwise, you need to have lots of passion in the field like Florence Nightingale.
