But what my child finds is that daily classwork and exam, what is learnt in the centre is different from what the IP school is teaching. IP schools tend to want to stretch the kids more hence they have more content or are doing things more advanced. I understand even btw IP schools, the contents and syllabus are different. Thats why we are exploring for one that can better support what is being taught in school at the moment before O level HCL.

a Secondary student studying in IP schools

OR

whether you are a Mainstream Upper Secondary student studying O-level track, and
taking Higher Chinese -

1) the HCL worksheets are the same ( identical ) in both centres (Fu lou shou complex and at Ang Mo Kio branch),

Because

at the end of the day -
all O-level HCL students
And
IP HCL students

are taking the same, exact, identical
O-level (Higher Chinese) papers.

Hence,

2) there is No such thing as HCL (Jiang laoshi) worksheets being customised or tailored, to different IP schools.

We still can’t find suitable HCL centre / tutor for my child that cater to her IP school syllabus. My child is above average in HCL but would like more help. Hope to have your opinion on

1. whether Jiang is suitable or how do they tweak the teaching content given IP schools have their own syllabus.
2. AMK and Fu Lu Should branch - which is more recommended?
3.Any other recommendations on tutor or centre highly appreciated too. Thanks.

This Oral workshop, Total 15 lessons, with each day's lesson focusing on different Oral topic, solid 2 hours duration per Oral lesson, just focus on Oral alone, registration was full house, when the first lesson #1 started 3 weeks ago, on 6 June 2022 (Monday) ! for O-level (pu-hua) SEAB exam code "1160" -

if you are a "Non-HCL" student, you have a choice of sitting for 2 round of "pu-hua" exam.

1st round in June,
2nd round in November.

For this year (2022),

- the 1st round (written exam) was conducted on 31 May 2022. Over already !

- the 2nd round (written exam) will be held on
8 November 2022.

- if you have scored A1 in O-level Round 1 (pu-hua), can stop.
No need to proceed to Round 2 (pu-hua), anymore.


But,
if you have scored (A2 to F9),
then can re-try
2nd round (pu-hua), in November.


However,
note that

November (pu-hua, O-level)
tend to be tougher than
June (pu-hua, O-level),

because of

the presence of
Sec 3 HCL students concurrently sitting at the November (National) exam.

Can I check with you your experience with the centre when your kid is in upper primary? My kid has been with them since p1, but recently, feel like she is not making any improvement. Her performance wasnt obvious in p1 n 2 as no exams. She always did very well in her performance tasks. However moving on to upper primary, with the exams as a testament to her learning progress, I find that she somehow seems to have stagnated. The centre does not focus on oral which she struggles with. Even when they occasionally have that few oral sessions, it’s more of going through the motion, get the students to speak in front of the class and that’s about it. No specific notes for them to study from. My girl feedback that compo is about copying what the teacher shows them on slides. Students were told to feel free to add in their own phrases or else just copy from the slides. She doesnt know how to apply any phrases and her compo has become really deplorable. Worse, once I showed her compo to a friend who is a teacher and marked for psle before and the friend commented that the phrase used in her compo, taught by her Jiang teacher, was awkward and not advisable. From when she was scoring better than her friends, now she is doing worse. They also dont seem to have taught any specific technique in answering compre questions. Mainly just copying answers. Does anyone notice the same with your child? Or is all good for you. Hope you can share. Am quite disheartened and been wondering if I shd switch her. Thanks in advance!

Teacher are experienced and Material is pitched at higher level than school, essay writing is very intensive almost every week since second half of P2. Jiang has made a mistake for not adapting fast enough during covid period with prerecorded lesson which pissed off many parents. Subsequently they managed to use live zoom session. In term of material, WLS 3hr lesson material is more balanced( oral and listening are emphasised more than Jiang, Jiang 3hr preparation for oral is not sufficient, parents need to top up extra class or DIY)more structured as they have a nice template to summarize the open compre answering technique, compo nice wording and oral topic before major exam period. WLS also repeats the same article in school textbook so it seems like a revision lesson on schoolwork on top of enrichment part. On the other hand Jiang material has more enrichment component and take home homework. Teacher wise In Jiang FLS are experienced but usually won’t update parents unless being asked. Fees are cheaper than WLS ( but must pay 20lessons in one shot) so it feels like value for money and we decide to stick there (3 years already) apart from proximity reason.

There were no personal calls made to me from Jiang Tuition Center, since late March 2020 when the government announced that enrichment centers had to be closed. My girl was a P6 student attending the session in Jiang Center. It is the worst choice that I had made for my kid to enrol her into the center. There was no call from the teacher to advise me what would be offered alternatively during the period that the center was closed. In fact, I was alerted subsequently via my sons’ teachers from Jiang Center, that there would be YouTube sessions being recorded for students to view. The YouTube sessions are for public viewing. I felt so cheated to pay for sessions that anyone could view. In fact, the videos are damn weird, featuring the teacher reading out passages to the screen. On 2nd May 2020, the P6 teacher finally got me via WhatsApp and rudely responded in the WhatsApp that I had finally responded to her message; and asked if I still wanted to know what were the arrangements for Jiang Tuition Centre? First they didn’t try to contact me, and dated to blatantly lie that they have been trying to call me. I went to check my call log, it didn’t register any missed call from Jiang Center. I called her and she kept rejecting my calls and said she was busy. Next they dare to ask if I would be interested to know about their arrangements during COVID-19 in May 2020 via WhatsApp. Didn’t I pay for service till end of May 2020? Subsequently, she sent me a PDF file to highlight there would be a ZOOM session on 5th May 2020, Tuesday. It was not clear when is the last session of such ZOOM session. When my girl went in on 19th May (Tuesday), she said the last ZOOM session was on 18th May 2020 (Monday). This was not told to me at all. When I asked if she could mail the books which my gal did not collect when the center was closed, she said got to wait till end of May 2020 or later. The lessons would have been over, what is the point of giving me back my materials which I had paid for after everything? When I asked her to mark a composition which I asked my girl to do for lesson 14, she said got to wait. I sent her the compo 3 times in email to remind her and 1 time via WhatsApp. Her response to my request for the marking is either NIL or asked me to wait.

She is the next in charge after the owner. She is taking charge of P6 cohort. If a teacher doesn’t listen and care about a student’s learning progress, how does she call herself a teacher? If she is the next in charge, her way of handling is a model to all other teachers in the same center. Any parent knows if there is any official channel to feedback to MOE? The center is mercenary!
