do you bring your own bags when going supermarkt or market?

if you don’t, do you at least ask the cashier to pack your things in such a way that no unneccessary plastic bags are wasted?

sometimes, I bring bags, sometime I don’t. it depends on whether I need the plastc bags to throw rubbish.

I heard that some shoppers buy, for example 18 items, requested for 18 bags! that is so wasteful!

A tiny deal really, but did not like that the Finest supermarket cashier ignored that I told her my 2 shopping bags can hold everything. I even packed everything till the few packs of meat left. There was still plenty of room left, but she decided to put the meat into a small orange-coloured reusable bag that was obviously sponsored- many logos on the side. When I got home and was curious, checked that the receipt did not have the 10 cents byo bag discount. Wonder if that is the store policy. Save themselves from paying 10 cents even for customers who bring their own bags by pack a few items into their rather useless for grocery shopping bag given it’s small size.

Dejavu, even down to the food I cook (like chives omelette, sambal sweet potato leaves). Instead of making tofu like my MIL though because I don’t eat that, I make yoghurt from milk myself. My MIL is really the fan of recycling.

Can rinse, no problem. Used to rinse Pediasure cans- no rust even after 2 weeks, when I would pass the stuff over for recycling. Just keep in a dry place. There is always some waste whenever what we used cannot be reused ourselves. So I often take my own tiffin carrier when I 'da-bao' food from outside (also because I don't like my food in plastic).

Perhaps I will try it out, current tin finishing very soon. Thanks ya.

Somehow remind mi of olden days when I am very young, love to follow my grandma to the market wif a 'gong' to tabao soup! Fond memories.... :rahrah:

Other than that, I use supermarket bags. Top up grocery on Ad hoc basis, so can’t remember to bring own bags. Besides I need plastic bags to throw rubbish. Can’t possibly throw directly into rubbish chute…hubby will combine rubbish from kids/my room together so as not to throw too many plastic bags.

It works for my hubby. A penny pincher is what he is not. But he sees no point in paying the 10 cents when he can easily whip out his own bags. Otherwise, he'll collect and use the plastic bags as trash bags. At one point in time, I had a cabinet full of plastic bags. Not funny when I was running short of space.

Oops, think I misunderstood your 10 cents deduction. At my present location, we have to pay for plastic bags.

Hmm, 10 cents deduction... how expensive are the trash bags in Singapore? :evil:

In Japan, you have to buy the plastic bags and pack your groceries yourself. In Australia too.
This is the practice in France too.

A quick question, though random, can empty formula milk tin be placed in recycle bin? Feel dat it's very bad to throw them away
Almost all packaging can be put in. Some places even do recycling of certain types of styrofoam but I don't know about NEA. Whatever it is, it should be clean - I read somewhere that in Japan there is a penalty if you put in unrecyclable stuff or packaging which has not been sufficiently cleaned/rinsed.

I have been using my own grocery bags nearly all the time for more than 5 years, and I have yet to run out of the rubbish bags that I accumulated before that. However, I do take the supermarket transparent bags to separately contain the meat that I buy. These ones are more useful for me at home, to hold the food waste.

For the supermarket check-out, since I use a basket to shop (sometimes 2 baskets), I put them on the counter and go straight to the other side of the cashier to pack the items after the cashier scans them. I normally use 2 bags so that I can separate the items nicely.

For odd purchases, I have a tote that fits into a size smaller than a tennis ball when folded, which I keep handy in my handbag.

they definitely SHOULD do more if they want more people to bring own bags, and not just deduct 10 cents.

come to think of it, in other countries such as Japan, korea, etc, weather is dry and cold, rubbish put so many days also wouldn’t be smelly, furthermore, they have very good ‘rubbish system’. I think these places are more successful in implement plastic bags free scheme.

however, in japan, i noticed that those confectionery shop, they pack cake, cookies in very nice boxes. even if you buy just 1 cookie, they would give you a box coupled with paper bag or plastic bag.

You know the irony I find is that nowadays there are so many shops and supermarkets giving away those recycled reusable cloth bags that it is the new plastic bags in terms of wastage. I how many such cloth bags do I need? 😄 I end up throwing up some of them away

Some like bleach & glass bottles had to b double-bagged. I like to sort the items when putting them on the counter as cashiers there don’t really bother to put similar items properly.

Some of the bags were punctured w holes & rendered them useless to line the rubbish bin. Can only reuse them to bring light stuff ard.

When i hv excess plastic bags, I’ll pass them to a wet mkt hawker who will reuse them to pack stuff to food stalls buying from him.

I am not ok with never give bags, so I cut down trips there. So far haven't go there for around 1 year +.

Maybe they have got lots of things to throw away, so need plastic bags.

for me, I don't think is a waste of plastic bags as i have a lot of things to throw. Kid's diapers with poos have to use plastic bags etc.
