<![CDATA[photocopied nric, birth cert, passport]]>unsure if this is a new or old topic.


anyway, what do you do with the photocopied nric, birth cert, passport when you submit them to banks, govt depts, biz for various reasons like opening accounts, applying for loans, school admissions, telephone contracts, opening of pub accounts etc?

i would always draw a line across them and write "this is soley for the purpose of applying for opening of bank account at posb" etc. of course, i would make sure the important details on the copy is not covered by my writing.

many a time, the other party would refuse to let me do so but obliged once i insisted. my purpose is to prevent it from being stolen/copied/misused for other purposes by naughty staff.

some schools here demand to have the nric for keeping before visitors are allowed to go in but i find them generally okay if you refuse politely and give them something else with minimum info and your picture on it.

but for schools, banks, hospital, insurance agents, property agents, private business etc, we are able to and should do it. afterall these places do not need to keep our documents overnite for verification.

likewise, i dont give my ic to the security guard to exchange for entry into condos or buliding.

So what do you offer the security guards instead?

I gave my driving license, which also consists photo and IC number. That is all they need.

yes, i draw a line across and write on it. been doing that for a few years.

staff at the banks, hospitals and starhub refused to let me do so initially but i insisted cos afterall, the papers are for filing purpose and nothing else so why not. this might not be 100% safety proof but for whoever wants to steal a record for bad intention, might skip mine (after seeing the note on it).
