My 12 year child has his Samsung phone, an old one. And everytime he uses it, I really monitor. Internet have its evil side.
I agree with you. Internet has pros and cons, so long as they are still minors they would need our proper guidance

The only thing i observed is that he is fully involved with his phone using whatsApp, Social Media and etc. Just wasting his time. Now I have decided to take back his mobile phone from him so that, he could properly focus on his study.

Pri sch not nec. You give it when they’re not mature or able to exercise self-control then poor habits formed at young age.


I’ve seen young kids addicted to hp games while waiting for parents to pickup or when parents call to check on what kids are up to after-sch but it’s so easy for the child to toggle & answer cal w/o parent knowing how much child had been focusing on games & not Studies.

Kids can make calls fr sch common use phone or thro receptionist help. At home hopefully there is an adult to access thro phone. But I do u’stand for some parents are FTWP w/o helper or elderly to help supervise.

daughter took over my iPhone 3GS in p3. my older one had his mobile phone when he was in sec 1.
their mobile phones are all hand me downs from me. I take care of my stuff, so when they take over, the condition is 9/10.

How old is the child? Does he really need one? If he is in Pr school and can do without, it's probably best to withhold. Even if he needs one, let him have it only when he needs it, and keep it away at other times. It's not all or nothing - you can set the rules and restrictions. Just make the rules clear before handing over the phone, and be very strict until good habits have been formed.

I don't think there needs to be a big debate in what phone to get your children. While it is true that more or less any phone will suffice, I believe that you should just look to get something you can afford. Wanting to give your children something better is not a crime. It is more important to teach them to be thankful for everything that they have and not to compare their belongings or even themselves with other children.

I do agree with you absolutely. For Pri sch going kids, don’t need any fancy phone if yr purpose is to connect & make calls with yr child after school hours for pick up, etc.

Get a simple phone only for calls. No internet, no downloaded games, etc. Certainly not nec to hv any other fanciful camera or whatever function.

A young child do not need to be spoilt with any branded gadgets. They’ll want them when they’ll in sec schools. Don’t kill their fun giving them to early lah.

I only give my kids after their PSLE, now they value more in using it for group discussion & input ideas for sharing on google doc, etc. That’s when they need to learn self-control with gadgets & ustand reasoning or u can teach them the marvels of technology and how they can use it in constructive ways & limit their playtime or screen games.

When gadgets given too early, kids do not ustand the value now nor know how to manage themselves & gadgets. When they do not use them for constructive work then idle time is for self-gratifying time. It’ll become “ALL THE TIME” on screen games.

He actually has a hp now in which we turn off 3g and no games downloaded. But he still can find things to do. I didn’t even know that the Google site becomes a game when not connected to internet! :shock:

Any idea which is the cheapest prepaid card in the market that doesn't expire quickly? How soon do prepaid plans expire?


Just need 8 yo DD to have a line to keep handy when she stays back so we can get hold of her in times of urgency.

She will get a basic clamshell phone which won't even have net access.
if the prepaid card doesn't have a free in coming plan, it should be cheaper and lasts longer. prepaid cards expiry would be 6 months...telcos keep changing. what I know is to extend the card expiry, it would be necessary to make a call out once a month. don't know if this is still applicable. check out M1.
