They are supposedly taught to apply this to the question. Otherwise, there would be a widescope of answers to consider.

Actually I bought quite a number of books. But we are effectively using only 2 books. Science companion by Renee Chong and Longman Weekly companion. Three in one by Janet Sim - we will touch here and there.

Key points are there and r sweet and short. Told son always remember key facts.

Eg what is this experiment trying to show?
Key fact: light travels in straight line.
Eg why does Tom able to push down the syringe (with air)?
Air can be compressed.

I teach them the skills in answering, and with the science concepts in their mind, thay can do it. But of course, this takes time.[/quote]

Same. By practicing more, my DD and my friends' kids have the chance to look into the suggested answers and eventually they understand the answering skills.

Why? When they practice and look at the \"suggested answer keys\" few times, they will get to know what is expected. Even we parents learn in that way, right? Of course, understanding the concept is more important. For my DD, she does not have problems in understanding the concepts. For example, if we write \"the height did not increase\", it is considered wrong (at least in our school). They are expected to write it does not \"grow\"

If u tell the kids verbally, they will just say \"Yes Yes Yes\" But by doing more practice, they will remember. So I still think Practice or rather better exposure is important.

Most 'Explain' questions are testing on at least one key concept. It is the duty of teachers to let kids know what the key concepts are.

Example, for Heat, there are only 3 broad key concepts.
1) Heat flow from a hotter place to a colder place,
2) Objects expand/change state/increase in temp when they gain heat. (vice versa)
3) Good conductors of heat allow heat to flow through easily.

If kids know the number of key concepts to remember for each topic, it will be much easier for them.
