Yup. The watch symbolizes the passage of time, time spent with your loved ones.

Truth be told, I've never spent a single cent on a timepiece in my entire life. I'm a makeup junkie, a bag & shoes lover and a jet setter like you. But I am blessed to receive watches as gifts from my loved ones without needing to hint or request.

If it sells well in the pawnshops, preloved stores, it means its value has risen.

Get a limited edition one this year, then come back to tell me got rise no rise after 10 years It's a form of investment that won't disappoint, I guarantee you. Chanel, Hermes bag value will depre. But movements won't.

Fountain pens are nice gifts for graduating kids too, but often you need to find the correct refill. I also received a fountain pen from my folks, but it leaked after 5 years.

Sorry to disappoint but it's actually more of a myth that a Rolex increases in value over time. A Rolex basically sells well and sells easily on the 2nd hand market but rarely it appreciates in value. Some do (e.g. the Oysterquartz and other rare/unique models that give the brand a halo effect), most don't.

Yup. A smooth sweep quartz watch is indistinguishable from mechanical watches just by looking at the dial. Bulova, Seiko, Omega are some recent examples of watch manufacturers that produce quartz watches with a smooth sweep (with decent battery life). Even Breitling and Rolex do smooth sweeping quartz watches at some point in their history (n.b. Rolex stops producing the Oysterquartz in the early 2000s. If you can get your hands on them, they are worth a fortune at auction houses today).

Apart from battery life, the other issue with mimicking a smooth sweep is cost: smooth sweeping requires high beat quartz movement, which don't come cheap. Hence, you can't find them on cheaper models.

There are actually a number of quartz watches that have a smooth sweep. Given the mechanics of quartz driven vs mechanical escapement there is no reason why a quartz watch could not be made to sweep as smooth or even smoother than a mechanical watch. The main reason why it's designed this way is the preservation of battery life.
