You're treating the public like primary school kids, if we can't exercise this self-discipline, no matter how many rules you have, it is still the same. It is just like putting signboard cannot litter but still we have ppl litter and sweeping floor at East Coast.

My main point is, feedback to company/media vs feedback to the person.

What steps the company needs to take, it is their problem. I'm not paid to solve problem for them. But they need to buck up the hygiene standards of their products. They own a duty of care to consumers.

Those suggestions are just examples, not concrete plans.. I just say that there are many things the company can do, that is what I'm trying to say.

What they do is not my biz. But whether the food is hygienic is my concern if I'm a consumer.

Culture? where does it start? Not by telling 1 or 2 persons off, but by on-going education program, including signboard to tell pple that it is not right to open packages etc.. if they(company) persist, it may develop into a culture..

And then auntie uncles will know that \"this supermarket cannot open packages to smell one\"..

East coast park problem..? I believe, if they really want to eradicate the problem, they can be quite successful.. it's whether they want to or not.

Singapore river was not cleaned up in 1 day. but we can see the results after 10 years. If the govt did not take active steps, would you see a clean Singapore river like today? If Singapore river can, East Coast park also can.. again, its whether they want to.

But seriously, the age of supermarket, which is our era, calls for a lot of self-ministering. The concept of self-service itself gives people the freedom to choose, not having someone following you around asking you what you want, taking your own sweet time etc. People who are not used to living in such environments, including those who like to poke, touch, and feel their merchandise before buying them gets viewed by the larger society as behaving inappropriately, yet, this was the way people used to shop at wet markets - possibly during major part of their lives. So is supermarket shopping really giving them more freedom or has it limited their freedom? Just want to share my perspective, not saying who's right and who's wrong.

Though I believe in minding my own business but I will tell the person off when I come across such inconsiderate acts. I believe it is more effective to act there and then instead of waiting for the supermarket staff to step in.

I have recently witnessed some elderly aunties opening up boxes of persimmons to pick, check and repack!! These are freshly displayed for special promotion. $3.95 for a box of 9. You can tell that they are newly arrived cos all the boxes are still chilled and the fruits too! i was quite taken aback. We I was living in Germany. You can’t even touch the fruits! Or you’ll risk being chase out!

Such inconsiderate acts do not just happen in Singapore. They happen everywhere. Since we are in a supposedly gracious society, we can't deliberately pick a fight with total strangers in public over a packet of chicken or milk. We have our own standards of dignity. Besides, what they are doing is not considered a crime. It's low class, but not a crime.

I have seen what the angmohs do when they catch an inconsiderate act at the supermarket... they stare at the person in disbelief for 2 minutes :shock: and try to get eye contact. That \"OMG, you are so uncouth / bad\" look may just do the trick. But in Singapore, we better don't stare at pple who look like gangsters.. unless we want to get stabbed. :slapshead:

It will take several generations of re-education to phase these people, and such inconsiderate acts, out.

So telling people off = defend own culture? If end up having a huge \"show\" in supermarket? No thank you. I would rather the supermarket do something... like placing some \"sample\" for customers who prefer to taste before buying.
