My two children are in different schools because they are international and amongst my friends this is very common as the more centrally located schools which had space in Phase 3 in previous years are now completely filled up. They are not allowing folks to come off wait lists for siblings, even if there is room. This is an incredible inconvenience to have 2 children in 2 schools very far apart by distance. This appears to be a new policy as of this year.

I am not sure about all the families but at least in our case, we got a letter offering us a spot in Kranji. I know that at least 9 other people got the same letter, so I guess MoE opened a new class there or something. I think the bit that was most surprising to me on this process was that despite the fact that we are foreigners, on employment pass, and paying Singaporean taxes, our balloting exercise is the same as "international" children on student pass whose parents send them to study, and from my ignorant perspective, do not seem to be paying Singaporean taxes or participate or contribute to local communities. As a result, competition at Phase III was more competitive than we thought. We did not get in for Phase III, but after 5 weeks or so we got a letter offering us a spot in Kranji.
The MoE letter was absolutely clear that we were offered a spot there, but we would not able to make any changes to his enrollment if we registered (no transfers, no moves) etc, and without the flexibility, the 45 minute commute, the lack of support network, transportation and so many more reasons; we decided to start home-schooling him. We have called every school that we had in waiting list as well, with no luck. Anyhow, we took the best decision available for our child, and homeschooling is proving to be the right choice for us. Singapore improves everything all the time, so I am sure, next year P1 exercise will be much better and hopefully with less anxiety.

I was shuttling between MSH and SJIJ on the last day of 2B submission and was monitoring the situation real time. At the same time, I was also online on this forum site. The information exchanges and live updates went on frenzy. I was certainly amazed with the amount of exchanges. KSP (or hosting vendor) servers were working overtime during the registration windows.

I hope my response will help ...

With this year's (2013) situation (SJIJ odds was like 1:6), I made the obvious choice and did the right thing. I was glad things turned out well and we were definitely very fortunate. Balloting was an extremely tense and nerve racking experience. I shared my balloting experience on another thread.

http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=462&start=1380

When your turn comes, I think there will be more seats available. 20 at 2B and 20 at 2C will be put aside for applicants without connections (policy/rule changes for 2014 P1 applicants). However competition will nevertheless be intense and demand will way outstrip supply. I have the opinion that the new policy has little impact. This is the trend I foresee. Please make informed decisions and weigh your odds carefully.

MSH is a mission (catholic), SAP and all-boys' school. It's a full school (has secondary school affiliation).

SJIJ is not a SAP school.

You can certainly weigh the pros and cons of both schools from research. Both have their track records as well as history.

All the best in your decision and I hope you are successful in getting to the primary school of your choice when your turn comes.

Cheers, J

jeffrey

Reply to 2013 P1 Registration Exercise for 2014 In-Take on Wed, 27 Nov 2013 12:40:47 GMT

gerberas99:

jeffrey:
Hi everyone -

This forum has been very informative.

I'd like your thoughts on what my chances are please for the following:

#1 SJIJ Phase 2B > 2km
#2 RVPS Phase 2C <2km

We are catholics and personally am inclined towards SJIJ given that it has secondary school affiliation.

I'm also thinking about renting a place to be closer to SJIJ to increase our chances.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I came across your post and was just wondering whether your son got into SJIJ under Phase 2B? You can pm him coz it won't be nice of me to reveal more.

For >2km, there will definitely be balloting at SJIJ.
