<![CDATA[Old people are selling Tissue Packets]]>Hi All!

I noticed few old people with tissue packets in all mrt stations.
What do u people do? Do u buy?
Whenever I saw them I feel very pity for them.
I noticed nobody buy.I saw very rarely someone buy from them.
I want to know about them more.Why do they come to sell? Is that enough for them?Does anyone behind/force them to do so?Why the charity organisations don’t help them if they are so poor and can’t work?

quite a few times over the years, I have been approached by ppl saying they lost their wallet, no money to go home.....

here's the interesting part.

need to borrow 20 dollar to go home?

Some more, these people are quite young. E.g. the youngest was about 18.

I sometimes give a bit - e.g. 2 dollars or my spare coins for those that look more genuine. But perhaps I should just buy a big packet of tissue for these ppl instead. So that they can sell and raise the money to go home.

I met one from PRC who claimed that his wallet is with a friend who is flying in the next day and asked me for $80 so that he could book into a hotel.

nice try, I'll tell this PRC to go to the nearest police station or his embassy for help. Anyway, $80/- not enough for a hotel room.

They will send the old people in a car or van and pick them up hours later. These people stay in private property, think it’s terrace house. These stallholders cautioned me cos they know who are genuine. If you support those from syndicates, you are encouraging them. The old people don’t get the money actually.

They are just running a respectable retail operation. Buy in bulk from nearby Fairprice outlet and then breaking it up for the consumer who needs no more than 2 or 3 small packs. Reasonable margins for their daily expense. One of the last few trades not subsumed by GLCs. 😄

An indian boy, instructed by his mom, gave him a dollar and did not want the tissue. The guy called out after the boy and insisted that he take the tissue.

She is very old, yet trying to make a living on her own instead of depending on welfare of others. She is polite and not pushy like some others.
