<![CDATA[reasonable amt for maid phone card?]]>I am planning to pay for my new Fili maid’s phone card till her salary reduction is completed. i have been told the smart pinoy card is one of the better value ones for them.


what is a reasonable amt to give her for per month of usage? for her to call family, say abt 2 to 3 times per week?

1. Decent accommodation which meets all the following requirements:

Adequate shelter: accommodation must adequately protect your FDW from environmental elements such as the sun, rain or strong winds.
Provision of basic amenities: your FDW must minimally be provided a mattress, a pillow and a blanket. Basically, a place to sleep & space for her belongings

Sufficient ventilation: accommodation must be sufficiently ventilated. Mechanical ventilation (e.g. electrical fan) should be provided if natural ventilation is inadequate.

Ensuring safety and sanitation: your FDW must not sleep near any dangerous equipment or structure that could potentially cause harm or hurt to her. Similarly, she must not be made to sleep near areas which are wet or pose sanitation problems e.g. near the toilet.

Ensuring modesty: your FDW must not sleep in the same room as a male adult/ teenager.

2. 3 square meals & MOM had recently gave guidelines & made clear what food shld be included as part of a meal.

Typically, eyers provide shampoo & shower cream. Whether u provide detergent or not, the maid will wash her clothes with your supply unless u watch her 24/7 or measure exact usage for yr family's clothings. Lol.

My family & those I helped mobilize helpers will advise not to provide phone card or data plan as this will set them up to heavy usage & slack fr housework so as not to pamper them. I used to provide & top up helper’s MRT card once a mth as she fetched my kids fr school. But now that my kids are grown, current maid pays for her own MRT & phone card. Less problem with h’hold work not done or done shabbily. Do consider.

Are we required to pay for such expense?
if she is out running errands for us, we need to contact her too, no? what if she gets lost or needs to ask her when in doubt... ?

Also i was thinking if she can a SIM card with some data plan, can also allow us to keep track of her whereabouts...

Or can we just ask her to subscribe to the $8/mth data plan and pay by herself ?

Do employers also pay for her MRT cards when she goes for her off day?


im thinking is it okay if i ask her to buy all her daily necessities (shampoo, detergent, soap, etc.) herself and i only provide her 3 meals ??

1st time getting a maid... so not sure of the do and do nots.... any thoughts or advise ? thanks...

But i have a old nokia that is skype capable. I took out the sim card and put a sim pin on it. I link the setup to a skype account that i own (and monitor) and hook the phone to our home wireless lan.

$10 can call for as long as she likes.

Its a bonus her family have skype in the philippines and they can talk for free. I let her talk after she finish her housework and after 830pm.

The rule is she has to return the phone back into a box when she is done and not use it during the day unless she has my permission.

One dials a local number to get through. Guess it’s different from prepaid cards that one inserts to a mobile phone.

not sure about cheap but I buy mine from Peninsula plaza. dunno which is the best, but there is one grocery cum money remittance shop at level 3/4 (with bright yellow?/orange signboard - it's a fairly big set up). My maid had sent back money twice there - no issue.

I used to get mine from street vendors around SG but they can be fairly unreliable - ie the number can NEVER get through. The ones I get from that shop is okay, haven't heard any complaints from my maid and while I dun monitor, I understand she was able to talk to her family.

Do you have cctv at home that you can monitor if she’s using the phone while looking after the children? I guess even if you don’t allow her to get, she might get the phone secretly, maybe you can give her warning that you will confiscate the phone if she use it when she’s working?
