During Open house Polytechnic, you can pose this question, to this Officer in charge.

By and large, if your son in the Poly wants to pursue a local University course, in some highly popular hot in demand course faculty, often, this will require at least a 3.75 to 4.0 GPA score, in his final year.

After Poly graduation,
2 routes are open (available) for him :-

1) work first, to gain some working experience, before going back to study in the uni.

This way, the Poly graduate will be certain of the right course (direction in career path) to pick & to further his study,
because

the working life exposure in the industry, will help him to confirm if that is really what he wants to work in.

2) don't work yet.

Straight away, continue to further his study

either

locally or
go overseas abroad to (UK / USA / Australia / European) universities, for further study.

Some Poly courses can enable students to jump / to be admitted directly into 2nd year of the uni course, skip the first year.

Yes, by & large, is about one third of students with high GPA score, will continue to local uni.

Why ?

Because

the purpose of receiving your Poly Diploma, is to prepare students for .... working life.

In fact, in their final third year,
just before Internship about to start,

the Poly course coordinator inside that faculty, will inform students which are the companies going to come down to interview them. Since more of the higher-scoring students opt for JCs, it's not surprising that a higher percentage go to university. It doesn't mean that if the grades of the students were the same, some magic happens in JCs that makes it more likely for the student to qualify for university. Even between JCs, some (where the students enter with better grades) generally have higher proportions of students going to university. There are a couple of JCs where the proportion going to university is also about 30%. So if your child would probably have qualified for university had he gone to JC, it's not going to be very different if he goes to poly. In fact, some students tell me it's more likely that they will go to university through poly - no MTL, no GP, and they are often willing to go to SIT, SUSS, etc. rather than only consider the big 3.

sharonkhoo

Reply to JC or Poly? on Wed, 17 Jan 2024 01:45:23 GMT

In Poly seems can get more options on the courses and the courses sound interesting. Hope this helps in reducing the stress of A level students. :rahrah:

Yes, this Pioneering 2024 batch where Project Work (A-level) is only a Pass or Fail : is a relief.

For students who cannot do work consistently, better don't go Poly, because not suitable. If struggle to keep up consistently, very hard to get a good GPA, at the end of 3 years in Poly. Because inside Poly, life is kind of relaxed. If u dont want to study, nobody bother nor keep track of u. 3 years, is not a short time.

phtthp

Reply to JC or Poly? on Sun, 14 Jan 2024 14:20:31 GMT

zac's mum\" post_id=\"2127096\" time=\"1705239405\" user_id=\"53606:
Do u mean ELL (English Language and Linguistics)?

If any KSP knows anyone who has taken ELL as H2 subject, please let me know; I’d like to find out more!
The number of students taking ELL is small. Do note that if your kid ever needs tuition help at A levels, there are far more tuition services available for Phy/Chem/Bio/GP/Econs/Maths. I think tuition hardly exists for the other subjects.
Also, I noticed that the A level timetable is friendliest to the typical subject combinations. Those doing odd combination run the risk of awful A level timetables.

doodbug

Reply to JC or Poly? on Sun, 14 Jan 2024 14:07:03 GMT

I remember the guy at booth also mentioned minimal exams for the poly course.

Need to rethink..

Fewer exams, not NO exams! The plus point is that exams tend to cover only that semester's work.

But, you should warn her that poly is continual assessment - which means that she cannot allow anything to slip. Every assignment, project, class participation etc. counts. It can be even more pressurising that studying for exams. Some students actually prefer to study for exams a couple of times a year than have to be on their toes continually. It takes better time management, and often more maturity, to handle continual work and projects.

sharonkhoo

Reply to JC or Poly? on Sun, 14 Jan 2024 01:16:35 GMT

No exam means all depends on project and most are group projects. Finding common available time is alr an challenge or to say the type of members in the group.

Poly is easier if goal is to get diploma and then go out to work. No need worry abt grades, so if grp proj gets lousy grade, also doesn’t matter.

How to know poly is the right choice? The kid is alr doing own research on the subject or field, even better alr doing work on his own.
Met a NP student at last yr open house. He is taking banking and finance course. His parents are in the field and he was alr doing trading since sec sch. He even showed me his account on his phone. This type, he alr know what he wants to do, very safe to go poly. He shared he is aiming good grades to get into uni, what grades and how to achieve etc.
