JC or Poly?

UBKmom:
On 31 January 2019 (Thursday), we will know what's the COP at Dunman High, since posting results out on that day
DHS est COP 12 to 15??...same level as CJC and worst than ASRJC??...I thought they should at least same level as NY, NJ..well probably people prefer the real JC life.... -
Clar06:
Technically speaking, their own students don't need to apply through JAE right? They just need to score whatever at O-levels to continue to Year 5, no?
Apparently according to the teacher, they accepted their own O’level students around this range. With only 80 places, I really doubt it will be the case and maybe criteria for other O’level students might be different too. Understand quite a no. of students with better scores from her school are applying for it.UBKmom:

Anyway, I low key juz hope she get into Poly .. -
When DS works on a piece of hands on work, he gets it done (70-80%).
When DS works on a academic question, he gets it done (70-80%).
Maybe the degrees of difficulty between hands on work and academic question have to be calibrated, but we do not know of a way to do it. E.g. if he gets an easy piece of hands on work, and a difficult academic question it doesn’t indicate anything, or vice versa. How else can we tell which learning mode suits him better since he doesn’t indicate a preference for academic work or hands on work at the moment (for the purposes of choosing Poly or JC) ?
Also wanted to verify if a rumour is true, that some schools offer ALP and scores of ALP, just like OP/ IP subjects can be used for Poly admissions. Is there such a thing ? -
Not sure what to post so I borrow this thread. I just found out from MOE website that in order to enter JC, the L1R5 must contain the following:
- EL or HCL
- any humanities or special language
- any maths or science
- any humanities or special language or maths or sci
- any 2 relevant subjects
Where does computing fall under?
I heard a boy who dsa to Hci jc could not enter his computing score into the online dsa portal and was forced to use his lesser subject as a substitute. -

R3 (bold and underline above) can include math/science. R1 (italics) is the one that can trip people up.

So we need 2 humanities?
Did I misinterpret?

I think Computing is a O subject, O as in Others. So it goes under R4 and R5.

R1 is a H (humanities)
R2 is a S (science) or M (maths)
R3 is a H or S or M.
R4 and R5 are any of the above or an O (others) -

Out of curiosity I went to look deeper into someone who is taking 9 O level subjects with hcl being the 9th. And MOE also state if you use hcl you cannot use cl in any of the L1R5 Components (correct me if wrong interpretation). So assuming someone is weaker in English and hv to use HCL in L1, essentially for the R5 it cannot use CL. Out of the remaining R5, essentially you hv to take everything except 1 subject as a buffer since EL cannot be used. Quite restraining…..

The logic is you can’t double count CL. HCL is not viewed as a 9th subject, it’s more like a 8.5. -

Am I correct to say that if hcl is L1, CL cannot be R5 (based on the logic CL/HCL is viewed as one), then EL also cannot be used in R5 correct? So if EL is used as L1, can hcl or cl be used as R5 under the ‘others’ bucket? Seems like in sec sch, it doesn’t pay to be good in Chinese.

IIRC, neither EL nor CL can be used as the R subject, simply because they are categorized as L subjects.

Doing HCL for O levels still gives u 2 benefits: -2 bonus points, and no need to take H1 CL in JC.
Not that it doesnt pay to do HCL (it does), but you are correct in that it doesnt pay to *do extremely well* in HCL or CL in secondary school. Chinese buffs however, may want to consider Chinese Literature as their humanities subject (half my Sec 4 class did that).
If u want to maximise efficiency, work harder to get A1 for EL is probably smarter, side benefit maybe the humanities essays will improve also. Set the grounding for GP in JC as well.
