We should try to strike a balance: no sugar coating, and no dramatising. Life is seldom all or nothing. There will be many jobs to choose from. If we can’t get job at company ABC, we can wait a little longer and try company DEF. If we can’t get a $$$ paying job, we can settle for $$ paying job in mean time. If your lifestyle really require that extra $, then upgrade yourself and try for another $$$ job later. In Spore we are relatively fortunate to have high mobility and opportunities, as long we are willing to keep improving. There are many other places on earth that don’t even have enough jobs to go around.

If what drive you , is to be better than the rest, it’s a personal choice. But has to be prepared for additional stress.

I agree with you in part - yes, life is competitive, and there will always be people who want the same thing as you. Where I disagree is the assumption is that \"education is not competitive\" means people having no drive. I think where Sg went overboard is that competition was focused on beating the next guy and being pressured to be the best, rather than improving on your own best to get better at whatever you do.

I think because we went too far in one direction, it seems that we are going to far in the other as a corrective. The ideal, in my opinion, is that each person should have an innate desire to do the best he can, which of course does involve comparing with others. But the comparison should not create stress and envy, but a recognition of where he stands. Not everyone can be the best at something; some people will only be average at something, or even poor at everything, but if that is the best he can do, he can be proud of having done his best.

Life IS competitive to begin with. Just remember, for the job you have now, there are hundreds of people eyeing it with green eyes. Early school education should be competitive so that kids can grow up knowing how to handle the situations when push come to shove! By molly-coddling the average folks who form the bulk of the population, saying that \"education should not be competitive\", it seems like the government is creating a future where there is no drive for anyone. It will not be unlike communism where \"everyone is equal\", so there is no point in doing anything to get a slight edge over others to better oneself.

Fortunately, the educators and parents have more sense, and the promotion into different schools do give us chance to compare ourselves against others.

So, if anyone says education should not be competitive, just ask them why do we bother with AL scores, L1R5, ..., etc?
