My Gal's Sch has specify either one of Above for use in their Year 1 IP Prog.
And Parents Gotta Buy Either One for our kid.

Vendor spec 13\" ....

1st Consideration :
Apart from the Weight Issue, MB Air is Lighter at 1.35kg (Compared to 2.04kg for MB Pro),

What R the Things We shd Look out for when considering?

2nd Consideration :
Some one Highlighted that MB Air has no disc drive, but others say can use thumb drive instead.

Can Fellow Techies Brota and sista Comment?

The Macbook Air, while it has it’s downsides, there are workarounds with USB flash cards for data transfer, USB external drives for expanded storage, external DVD ROM drives, etc… Not the most elegant, but it does work on those occassions you need those peripherals.
However, if you need to do rendering on your notebook, there are no workarounds. You just need a more powerful cpu processor, that only the MacBook Pro can provide.
You can, of course, look at the Windows notebook options as well. Both will provide the necessary computing muscle to do rendering.

If it were me, I’ll take the more powerful processor. If I need the compute power, it’s there. There’s just no workaround for that. The 700g difference is worth it (13" screen)

One way is to get the Macbook first since they just upgraded it Oct 2011.
Let your dd get use to the new OS, then get the Mac Air when the new model come out. You can always use the Macbook at home after you buy the Mac Air for your dd to bring to school.

Oic... in that case, then get the mac with the faster processing speed. Personally, I wd go with the 13\" - there are 2 models for that. Get the higher tier one in that category. It shd help to see her through her sec school years. In any case, it's not as if she is a gamer or an IT programming student who needs all the sophisticated RAMs and speed, so don't think she will lose out much.

The Mac Air is light but if not mistaken the RAMs and processing speed is slightly lower than the Pro.

Not an IT expert so please take my sharing from a very amatuerish viewpoint. 😉

I'm quite sure there is. A teacher friend did mention that financial assistance is provided for needy students. But not sure if there are minimum requirements to be fulfilled. Best to check with the school.

there are some reports or speculation of a possible technical refresh in early 2012. Usually, it is changing the various components like CPU to newer models. Some say maybe a new 15\" model for pro.

Think for students, the 15\" model is a tad too big and cumbersome. Think it's more suited for gamers and maybe IT students - who needs the wider screen for programming. Feel that the 13\" model is good enough and less heavy too compared to the 15\"

Then you can use Word, PPT and Excel on Mac. Otherwise, just MS Office alone is not compatible for Apple products
