THE report \"Sorry, your child is not bright enough\" (Jan 3) highlights a point I have long suspected: That some enrichment centres admit only pupils who are doing well but who are still sent to the centres.

I do not fault the centres for ensuring their survival by conducting screening tests and accepting only pupils who pass - the quickest, easiest way to produce a good track record. Parents are the cause of this situation.

They send their children to only centres with good track records, never mind the costly fees. These pupils, many of whom are already motivated to excel, need just a push from the centres to achieve better results.

Even without much improvement after joining these centres, these pupils would still perform well in examinations.

Parents on the side would think highly of such centres and rush to get their children admitted. Other centres that do not produce such track records would be unable to get enough pupils to keep going.

I do not think these famous enrichment centres are the solution to helping children cope with the rigour of our education system. Parents should supervise their children more.

We have read many write-ups on the top pupils in our national exams, and the key determinant of their performance is parental interest in their studies.

Thus, parents should not be upset if their children are not in branded enrichment centres.

Instead, this should indicate that we have not spent enough time coaching and helping our children with their school work as well as preparing them to face the challenges of the world.

i m at a crossrd. tho i m not fantastic in math, i m hesitant to add in tuition for my p4 gal bcos she already has eng compo class whc she enjoys, sci tuition,piano, church class, swimming (lucky no ballet), and i dropped her ch class n english enrichment class cos too busy, n dropped her math class cos timing clashed.

the other reason i m hesistant is her carelessness is in her, not sthing that can be resolved by group tuition or home tutor.
Boys are very hard to tame...need the rotan to wake them up.
But Math is something that will help her especially since she's going to P5 next year.

eg write the 1st 2 common multiples of 3,4,8,
she started listing in the middle of the space and hence no space to hit 48 (2nd multiple) and she stopped n went to list for 4.
had she started in beginng of the margin, she wld have the space to reach 48.

for 3digit by 1 digit multiplication, she tends to do multiplication for the ones but come the tens, she went to add the numbers instead of times!
or she will forget to carry forward the tens, such things how to rectify by tuition?? only by drilling i hope

With the crazy education system now, it's quite hard to be a full time working mum. It doesn't look like I can return to the work force even after son goes to Sec 1 next year. My daughter will be in P3 and I'm stressed coaching her now.

Quit my job before my boy was born. He was born with cleft, so it has been a busy 12 years up till now. I don't push him a lot but made sure he doesn't fail his exams, stay healthy and sane, that is most important.

Tutors have a way to coach which made hubby and I totally surrender. Hubby taught him maths until P5 May and realized he just doesn't know how to explain any longer. This year being crucial year, we had to tighten our belts and get in tutors. My job is to motivate and encourage him.

right now her tuition centre teacher seems good but i suspect the prob is either its not exam question focused enuf or that, as i have found out, my gal wasnt listening, as in she heard but she cant grasp that wat was said was an impt thing to note and hence she cant rem. she has quite a number of basic concept mcqs wrong even in tuition wksht.

she prob needs more drilling.

i m not sure to switch centre or not cos the teacher is willg to answer indiv parent queries and gv feedback but if go to big tuition centres, u cant talk directly to the teacher.

Do you mind to share which centre is she in now?It seems great 😄
