Does anyone have a child taking French-in-lieu and starting year 3 or sec 3 in January 2023?

I'm looking for a fellow student to start a private tuition class with my dd at French Toast (Upp Thomson Road) :rahrah:

For 2 students, it costs only $42.5 per hour per student - even cheaper if you sign up for 23+1 package ($892.50 for 24 lessons)

For 3 students, it costs only $30 per hour! ($630 for 24 hours!) If your child already has a class at MOELC and wants to have extra classes with my dd as booster, he/she is welcome to join in too!

I find speaking French really hard. I had a room mate who was a double major in Computer Science and French and he tried to teach me French, which I gave up because it was impossible for me to pronounce the French \"r\" 🙂 But French is a beautiful language, almost lyrical when spoken. Lovely.

If you fall back on the French-origin word then your writing can not sometimes sound more creative and interesting with barely even trying. Eg. “I’m hungry“ = je faim > I’m famished. “A kind face” > un visage gentil > a gentle visage.

He prefers someone to come to our home 1-2 times a week. Does anyone have such a teacher to recommend? And if he’s interested to take a proficiency test, does he need special training? Right now, he just wants to have classes for enjoyment though.

Hi, I studied French as a foreign language & yes, L'Alliance Francaise is very good. Most of the teachers are Native French, very chic. You get to use their library, which has a good collection of French books, magazines & movies. At the same time, it is easy to find interest groups there so with more practice you can sit for your DELF in no time. Btw, you can always stop the classes & when you want to start again, they will give you a diagnostic test & fit you in the most suitable level.

for us it’s not so much for my son to learn as we’re bringing him up bilingual as his father speaks french and i english. he has picked up both languages and uses them interchangeably and is now 17 months old so just words for now.

Since English is the First Language in Singapore, it is compulsory for all students to take English in the local schools. Exposure to the English language is definitely not a problem here. As to why parents put their children in foreign languages classes, I suppose it is up to the individual's family/home situation. Some parents may find it difficult to help their children in their Chinese Homework and Exams, especially those who do not speak the Chinese Language at all. Tuition does not come cheap nowadays. Some families may have 'French' connections - maybe one of the parents is French and would like their children to learn their mother tongue instead of seeing their children struggle with Mandarin. Some children take French as a Third Language out of interest. I know of a couple who comes from Sri Lanka. They only speak English and Sinhalese. They do not even speak Tamil. They are trying to get their child exempted from Tamil as MTL. There are so many possibilities......

As to why many choose French Language compared to other foreign languages? Alliance Francaise has a very organized and time proven system of teaching the language. They have courses for children from 2+ years of age. I do not know of any other centers doing that.

As for me, I personally went through the Alliance Francaise method in Penang and Sri Lanka, ages ago though :). Glad to say, I was able to converse in French during my one year stay in Mauritius. I know I can help my child in French and I know my child will struggle less with French compared to Mandarin. She does not mind speaking in Mandarin but dislikes writing Chinese characters. I rather not kill her love for the Chinese Language. As long as she is able to converse in Mandarin, I am happy.

Just to satisfy my own curiosity when posing this question as why parent wish to send their child to french language instead of other language like English, Mandarin which the child will use these language more in school and their environment? Do these parent have learnt French before or in expat school? So how do you all keep French language alive at home, do you speak to your child in French?

i oso noticed that a lot of parent go for French instead of other languages e.g. German, Korean, Japanese why is it so?

http://www.alliancefrancaise.org.sg/ at 1 Sarkies Rd does provide lessons for children who opted to take French in lieu of their mother tongue languages that are not taught at main stream schools.

There's a relatively new French language school called the http://www.frenchtoast.sg/ at 213 Thomson Rd too but I'm not familiar with their classes.

How is your child exempted for Chinese class may I ask?
