Get red beans and put into container with cotton wool. To make experiment interesting, can have variation of conditions for beans in different containers eg

- without water

- put in a dark cupboard

- put in freezer

- put many seeds together in one container (to illustrate effects of overcrowding)

- put in a dark place but with light nearby (plants will grow towards light, illustrate plants respond to conditions and need light to grow)

The container with only a few beans, sufficient sunlight, warmth and water will be the control setup.

Can further explain where seedlings get their food, from seed leaves, etc.

Can also try growing potato from the its "eyes", ie buds. Cut a small section out with the "eyes" and grow it in container with cotton wool. Can use this to explain plants grow from different plant parts.
