Mum promised to buy my daughter fighting fish...so I told my mum to look after it since she promised. My daughter made bridges made of Lego and put into the container 'for the fish to swim under'...or else she puts her hands in to 'feel the fish'. If not, she feeds the fish every other hour. I pity the poor fish. No thank you...I have enough on my hands.

Terrapins are cute when they are young. When they reached a certain age, they aren't as cute anymore. What if DS lose interest in them once the terrapin lose its cuteness? :oops:

Hi Joule, mine are abyssinian GPs and according to the vet, they tend to be shy.

What breed is yours?
I have to struggle to take them out of the cage cos they will run away from me.
When out of the cage they look so apprehensive with their heart beat pounding and they will stay put like a statue.
I like the wheek wheek sound.
That is the only time when i feel reciprocated.

Actually I find guines pigs most unreciprocating pets that I have reared.
Rabbits are better, at least they are not afraid of people.

I don't know what is affectionate = ) All I can say is that they make 'happy gurgling' noises when you pet them or massage them. Not like dog or cat where they show more readily.

Wife / me sometimes put them on chest and then read book while lying down...

Once I fell asleep and the guinea pig peed on me....it was about 1/2 hr.

They are quite 'useless' as well...won't try to escape

Actually wheeking also quite cute already what.... = )

I like my peegs.

the oldest is near to 7

the youngest is 4 years old

all were adopted.

I would encourage ppl to adopt, don't buy. Be a responsible pet owner.

Also, do read up on the pet before buying.

And NEVER buy pets as gifts for others.

Oh, syrian hamster can up to 3 years.... that's fairly long.
Mine were dwarf hamsters.

Guinea pig can live for so long?
I adopted a male and female GP.
They never had offsprings when they were with their previous owner.
But i decided not to take the chance and neutered the male, but to my disbelief, the female was already pregnant as she gave birth to another 2 GP one month later!

I am a 'pet nazi' and I strongly discourage parents from getting a pet (more specifically little animals) just because the little ones want one.

It's all fun and games but at SPCA there are so many abandoned pets.

Remember, a pet is for LIFE.

Rabbits live for 12 years

Hamsters live for 3 years

I agree with you that a pet is for life!

However, on the whole hamsters live up to 2 years old.
I had 18 hamsters previously.
Most of them left at about 18 months to 2 years.
The oldest perished at 2.5 years old.

I have 4 guinea pigs below the age of 3 years old.
I read that their life span is about 5-6 years old.

We have a Couple of Wire Cages, Placed on the Floor.
Gou-Gou will Entertain itself - Sometimes Just Sitting in Front and Following the Progress of the Hammie in the Cage, at Other Time Practically Hugging the Cage, Trying to Lick its Little Frens within :laugh: :laugh:

Btw, We Have a Little Acrobatic Lady Hammie, Who Luv to Swing Upside Down on the Wire Cage with its .... Front Legs Only!

If you buy the good type of bedding which contain baking soda, it can absorb the smell and you can change the bedding about once a month.

However I find guinea pigs harder to take care.
You have to change the lining of the cage daily especially if you keep them in the house.
They are afraid of human beings and I can’t play with them even though they have been with me for 2 years. They are so apprehensive each time I take them out of the cage, so I’d rather observe them from afar.

I love my dad’s toy poodle. She is so affectionate and responsive to human affection. She was given to my dad by his friend who returned to his homeland.
I am thinking of getting a toy poodle.
Does anyone know where I can get it from a reliable source?

Please do not keep a pet so that you can teach your children responsibility, keep a pet only if you are prepared to love it and take care of it for life, the pet’s life. We can teach our children responsibility in various other ways as suggested by jedamum.

we have guppies. the daddy does the cleaning, the kids does the feeding.

it is the daddy's first pet.
actually there is no need to have pets to teach responsibility. it is my elder's responsibility to make breakfast for his younger brother on Saturdays and Sundays.
