Time has changed, in the past, neighbors keep a lookout for each other. Nowadays, all shut their door tight and needless to say, if you have any emergency at home, I doubt there will be much response. Does this gotto do with our kiasu, kiasi mentality? Or something wrong with our society? Or all "look forward" to money? Really missed the old kampong days. Sadly, our next generation will grow up in such a selfish environment.

Besides general reasons such as noise, not in use by residents here but other blocks further away, vulgarities from players etc....one of the reason that irks me was - depreciation of the value of the properties here due to the basketball court. Is $ all that counts?? So if eldercare services is being proposed here, will this group oppose?

On the basketball players....while they are a tad noisy.....I see them as the 'security guards' in this area. They may be rough, but in times of trouble, they are the ones who help out. Last year, an old lady was robbed in the lift...when she came out shouting for help, this very group of players immediately pan out and guard all 6 staircases and more went up the lift and started combing the block storey by storey. Needless to say, the robber could not escape.

Some years back, my 6yo DD fell off a railing and hit her head on a bed of massage rocks. She was covered in blood and it was still dripping. I shouted for help but yet not a single person came forward (all just sat & watch...>10 of them). End up, I yak off my 7yo DS shirt (which was dripping with perspiration) to stop the bleeding. There i was, carrying a 30+kg gal with a topless skinny boy following me running to the road to wait for the ambulance (i only had my mobile with me then). Along the way, a couple (30+) instead of helping....quickly grab their dog, step aside and stared at me in disgust ... yeah yeah, i was also covered with some blood. If this bunch of basketball players were around then, I'm sure the situation would have been totally different.

Frankly I dun know what I'm trying to say too.....but seriously, sometimes I'm really worried, the more educated we are....the colder we have become.

BeContented

Reply to Say 'Yes' To Eldercare Services on Mon, 13 Feb 2012 21:31:55 GMT

The Eldercare Centre will be built as planned afterall. I was wondering how to sign the petition for the past few days.Last year, an Eldercare centre was built at the void deck of my neighbouring block. Nobody thought much of it let alone protest against it. There is always a few elderly sitting and chilling out at my void deck. They are a familiar sight. In fact I feel safe with them around cos they know if there's a stranger or intruder in the area. When I first moved in, they 'screened' me, giving me the suspicious look.

tutormum

Reply to Say 'Yes' To Eldercare Services on Mon, 13 Feb 2012 05:11:00 GMT

I’ve signed the petition too. We don’t have enough eldercare facilities in Singapore. If MOH wants to build eldercare facilities near my house, I would give my full support too. The residents of Woodlands and Toh Yi have reasons for their protests, but those reasons are not convincing, in my opinion.
