Agree that there will be parents who will complain over such matters. But to not do something in order to avoid having issues with parents just doesn't cut it for me. 🤷

Wonder if parent will still feel appreciative if core subject periods were taken to teach PE/Art/Music? Appreciate teacher's effort yes. But accept how things are done today, no.

Fully and totally agree with this. Well, almost, personally, I feel it should be more then just weekends. But that is just me lah. Maybe cos I have kids who will drive me crazy if I coop them up at home too much. :razz:

That is just my opinion. Don't know why I bother so much about this PE thing oso. Maybe cos I am getting sick of how MOE is so delusional. Can't even fulfill the current 1.5hrs a week of PE and you want to add another 1hr.

That said, different schools different experience. I am having totally different experiences with DD's and DS's school.

I started playing football in a nearby basketball court and void decks (yes, leaving ball marks on the walls) when I was in P-school. I picked up table tennis from a friend and played regularly at the void decks.


I think we should go back to the question of why our kids are not taking up sports. Adding another hour to PE will not bring your kids to closer to playing the sports. It is just exposure and creating awareness. They need to be given the time and space to do so.

Nowadays, our kids are being bogged down by enrichment classes, CIP and project works. Where to find the time to indulge in sports?

That's the thing. If the PE tchr is not around, another tchr takes over and uses that time to teach the kids the subject that he/she normally takes. Seriously, how hard is it to get a bunch of kids to go to the field or court to play some games?

I mean, what do we want? Something like the US system?

I helped coach a racquet sport as PV for my DS's P-school, I know what sorts of big challenges they face. How far do we really need to take it? Up fees again? Or spend tax-payers' money?

For my boys, all of whom do not have the talent to be sportspersons, I have tremendous latitude for what MOE puts out as a CCA programme. Honestly, I couldn't care less what MOE puts out as a sports or PE programme.
MOE is well established and protected. Brickbats from minority are more often than not electrons to them.
No, I'm not suggesting schools pay for these student who took up niche sports as CCA.
I'm suggesting that schools should allow student to take up niche sports and recognised it as CCA in line with the Vision 2300 project.
I'm suggesting schools try not to use the outdated top down phrase - \"Our policy stated that.... hence this cannot that cannot.\"
Sports performance take years to develop, and schools should allow these student to train with their respective NSA or coach and not to hold them back 4 to 6 years.
Many potential niche sports talents need that 4 to 6 years training to prepare themselve for international competition at age 18.
We have many swimmers that are able to compete internationally at age 16 onwards cos many schools offer swimming as CCA hence their training is not disrupted.

No reward no action. Sports CCA offered by schools are mostly traditional sports. They have not evolved with time. High ranking civil servants are the stumbling blocks to changes. Their notorious answer to their junior's suggestion for change is NO.

MCYS is packaging Vision 2300 as a product to sell to other country.

Sports like wakeboarding, ice-skating, cycling, triathlon takes years to develop and these are sports not offered by schools.

Rigid policy promoted by exam-smart scholars has stifled any possiblity of sports development.

Vision 2030, 2300 is more realistic.

So, schools will outsource - to sports coaches which will require $$$ - the hourly charges ranges from $40 to $100++, which can amount to 5 figure sums a year. Will this cost be pass on to parents? As it is, many schools are asking parents to fork out copayment for certain CCAs - SCGS, MGS, Henry Park just to name a few.

Also, quality of sports coaches is also a concern. Certifications do not tell how committed how a coach is - i have seen enough coaches who slack when they teach a group.

MOE should be paying a fixed salary for these coaches - give them the same entitlements of a teacher, therefore the same appraisal. Also, the appraisal should be based on how well they improve the students base on the quality of students they have and not "imported" from other schools.

I am seriously worried that initiatives are rolled out without thoughts to the details and implications involved. I do hope that whoever is taking the lead does not live in the ivory tower and knows how to look at the operational issues as well.

Oh Yeah! DS hasn't been bringing his music book to school, and never hear him talk about music lesson in the curriculum!

BTW, why can't they give some good songs for the kids to learn music - it's another way of learning languages isn't it?

Asked him then what did they do during the PE periods, say sit down and listen to some talk or presentation. Told him maybe cos they are P1s and still so new to the school, they need to be brought up to date with some of the stuff the school is doing so they use the PE period to cover these. He ask me then use other periods lah, why not use Chinese or English since so many of these periods. PE only so few you know.


I must really think much much further before I start explaining things to DS nowadays.

As it is, schools are already ending very late what with supplementary/ccas etc


MOE should ensure that there is co-ordination with different divisions(curriculum, sports, ccas etc) to ensure that with this hour increase, there should be an hour decrease in some area like one or two less topics in Mathematics or Science or ??? and ensure that what is being tested is taught in class…

However, like what some of you have mentioned, I hope it doesn’t mean having to spend one extra hour in school each week! Yet, if time isn’t taken away from other subjects for PE, it means teachers will have to teach/cramp the syllabus into the reduced teaching hours. So what is going to be compromised?

when my son was in primary school, everytime the exam nears, all PE lessons will be suspended and replaced by doing revision work. He was very disappointed because PE means time to play and sweat instead of just mugging.
