A kindergarten is a place for children to learn values, socialise and learn with their peers. I know of kiasu parents-friends who let their K2 children practice P2 top schools tests papers! Ultimately, it is how much a child’s parents want the child to learn. For me, I’m thankful that my child’s teacher does not give Spelling. I read a lot to my child and satisfied that my child can construct sentences with given words. This shows understanding of application of the words first before guiding the child to spell the words.

it is very difficult to comment whether there is such a need or not… last time my ds was very gd in his spelling, for most words, he could spell after looking at it for a few times and he rmbs it very well… soon, i found every kindy book too easy for him and dunno what to do with him until i bought a book full of comprehension for him to do…

but it’s not the same with my dd… so i really understand why the school has to give difficult words.

They get sight words instead. By being able to spell sight words help termendously in my K2 boy’s ability to read.

Even in my time, I have to learn to spell words of at least 1 level higher than me. Eg. At P3, we spell words and their meanings eg. Comprehend = understand. Of course the exams always come out much easier but the words were imprinted in our minds so much that we could write good essays.

Don’t really have to learn. He is in SAP school and Chinese is really tough. I find it tough myself.

I wonder if it’s age appropriate for a K2 child to learn that word.

I think most kids from private kindergartens would be taught phonics and hanyupinyin by end of K2. They can do additions, subtractions and number bonds too. I think they will find at least first half of P1 boring. I am not sure of PCF kindy, probably the same too.


Some primary schools also over teach. Tuition centres definitely over teach too and so are some parents. Have heard cases of parents teaching one school year in advance to their kids at home.

Just to share, i saw some very difficult spelling words at the PCF near my home. They put it in the noticeboard outside the centre... the theme for that week was Plants so the words were like:


germinate
green pigment
bee pollen

and 2 more i cannot remember. My DD's only in Nursery in that PCF so i was surprised that the standard for K2 is so high now.
My ds had photosynthesis as spelling word at K2 under the theme of plants. I could not even spell that word correctly.

:hi5: I think what helps is the foundation of phonics, not necessarily rigorous spelling testing.

wow at the academic rigors at K2. My child never had spelling in preschool at all. Academic began for her at P1. Having said this, her schoolmates were mainly from high academic rigor preschool.....so it is the trend.
