Nothing wrong with Chinese books that have lots of hanyu pinyin. To cultivate an interest in Chinese, first they need to understand what’s going on. I mean it’s not interesting if I force you to watch K-drama without subtitles and you have no idea what’s happening. If you can read the subtitles, maybe you will develop an interest in understanding and start paying more attention.

At Pri 2, the focus should be more on expanding vocab and cultivating interest in the language (as compared to word recognition) 听 > 说 > 读 > 写

绘本are suitable for this level, although the cost for each book can be a bit expensive (vs. story books with much more content).

She is kind and patient with students. She has proven records of helping weaker students to sustain their interest in the language and at the same time pull their results up. I was her student in primary school and my Chinese improved a lot since I met her. Wasn’t a straight A student before I met her but subsequently achieved A* for Chinese and Distinction for HCL. I developed an interest in Chinese Writing and entered Dunman High School. Thanks to her I managed to found my Forte in languages and took up H2 Translation (Chinese) for A level. Currently awaiting results and wish to continue to offer tuition for primary school students(I was a student tutor for 3 years before I decided to take a break for A levels).

Chinese is not a difficult language to learn and the most important part in to build the confidence in children so that they stay interested in the language and will be capable of doing well in the subject.

if they really find it so stressful, should enrol their kids into SAP schools or join those NON-SAP schools which are not so demanding on HCL requirement(s) (instead of GEP schools, like St Hilda) :-
whereby default, all P1 students in SAP schools kick off Higher Chinese (HCL), from P1 Term 1 until end of P4.

At least, students have FOUR long, peaceful years to learn HCL smoothly & un-interupted, until reach @end of P4 , where (SAP schools + a few other NON--SAP schools) check their overall results, see if students got stamina to still continue with HCL in P5, or not ?

by then, after reach end of P4 : if really can't cope, then drop HCL, to concentrate on other subjects at P5.
But at least, (SAP school + certain NON-SAP school) students have been been the opportunity to study HCL for 4 years, since day 1 joined Primary 1.

Some NON-SAP schools, eg : like Raffles Girls primary, also a GEP school, for instance (eg), behave exactly like SAP schools too, in their HCL treatment :-
whereby from P1 Term 1 : ALL Rgps Primary 1 students get to study HCL, ie. ALL (EVERYBODY) start off on equal footing, until reach End-of-P4 : re-access students again.

See the big difference in HCL treatment, between Raffles Girls' Primary vs. St Hilda primary : although both are common in being NON-SAP schools, & both are also GEP schools ?
(only difference is one is All-girls school, while another is co-ed)

so, do check out which NON-SAP schools in Singapore, behave like SAP schools.
ie. study 4 years of HCL peacefully, without any interuption whatsoever, before enroling your kid for Primary 1 registration !

do due diligence homework background, first, before hopping into stressful schools like St Hilda : so strict with their HCL requirement : must fall within don't know how many Top X% of entire level cohort, then can allow your kid, to study HCL

in fact, more NON-SAP schools should be more generous, should behave like Rgps & all other SAP Schools -
be generous, let ALL P1, P2 students study Higher Chinese !


WHY ?
for 2 important reasons :-

kids in P1, P2 -

a) are at their best stage in their life to learn HCL, because they are so young (being only 7, 8 years old), their nimble young minds can absorb languages very fast like a sponge,

AND

b) don't have very heavy content subjects like Science coming in to tackle, yet
(until reach P3, then Science is introduced)
