I need to renew my helper's passport, she has been with me slightly more than a year. Can I check what is the practice, does the employer pays for it or the helper themselves or half/half? :scratchhead:

We told her that we will discuss off days when she is longer with us. We are not ruling out the possibility of giving her off day even though the contract says so.


Regarding the payment, we just want to make it clear to her that it is not fair for us to pay if she doesn’t complete the contract with us. Well, if she wants to pursue this with her embassy and cry foul go ahead, I think we can afford to lose the $35. I spoke to an office at MOM and of course they do not want to commit and say which of the contract is binding in the event she go and complain, but the advise is that we draw another contract saying that she will honour the initial contract that she signed with us at the agency.

I think as an employer we can only hope for the best.

The only clause I am not agreeable is the off day to be given. Actually the officer only ask me if she's given any off days and I said no. He didn't even try to ask me to give her any off days. Looks like you are OK on this and there is no contradiction here.

The agreement that you signed at the embassy is different from your modified original contract. Which one will be binding? (Obviously no issue if maid completes 2 years and you are prepared to refund her the money) Hope I can learn something from this

I must say I am speechless as the whole process was extremely smooth and the whole thing took 1 hour.


Reached there at 9am. Changed for 2 passes at the security. Then proceed to get queue no. Then wait for number to be called. Submit forms and documents at the counter, make payment then go back to counter for thumb print. Then go 2nd floor for interview. Then go home. Go back after 3 working days to collect.

All this only took 1 hour which really impressed me. Luckily I didn’t get agent to do such easy job. But it’s better to go early coz the queue moves faster.

It will be faster if you get the form all filled up and all the documents copied before you get there coz there may be a queue for photo taking and photocopying service and there might be a chance that your number will be skipped.

and i found out how easy it was to make the passport myself with my maid.. $45 max incl $10 for foto. 😞

I remembered the agent ask me to sign some papers.


It is about $100+ more to ask agent to do. The first one I did on my own, have to travel to go embassy to take number followed by going to one photo studio to take photos then back embassy again. Then go to a lawyer to sign some paper. Took me whole day. Stressful.
What agent you went to that charges only $100 extra. ~How much in total you paid?
Was it Indon maid? Nowadays relatively easy and cheap to renew. Don't need to go to a lawyer's office anymore. Just go embassy once to sign agreement n submit form (but prob have to wait patiently in Q). Then go back to collect the passport a few days later. Less than $100 all in.

That I know but I was told that employer has to be present with the maid during renewal. So m not sure if that's the requirement, then agent can still do on behalf.

That's what I did too.
Agent says they have to pay passport renewal themselves and they know.

I just want to share that it is cheaper and easier to renew the passport on line for your Phil.helper.

I did it for my helper and only have to pay $102. It's really easy send application on-line with documents, then they will give you an appointment date. On the day of appointment just have to go embassy, take photo etc then get another appointment date to collect passport. 😄

But what is disturbing is that to see her out of my house in the afternoon, many many houses away, on another street and trying to hide among bushes when she saw my car. If she needs to return a book or leave the house a little while she could hv just sms me and inform me.


Is she pinching things out of your home? My neighbour learnt the hard way when his maid go roaming outside his home

Passport is her own property but since she is going to renew her contract, I decided on the goodwill. She is filipino, renewal cost about $400. We worked out a payment schedule of $50/mth deducted from her monthly pay.

I did the submission on-line for her on the embassy website. I just wanted to make sure what is the right amount so that I know what how much to prepare for her when she goes for her appointment and payment.

I intended to pay for her but after a recent incident whereby I caught her outside my house (down the street) I have 2nd thoughts now. She told me she has gone out to return a story book to one of the neighbor further down the road but when she saw my car she quickly ran and tried to hide among some bushes has certainly made me more suspicious of her.

Ha Ha this maid sure up to something. Actually i don't mind maid talks a bit to other maid. I can understand how excited they are when see 同乡. Actually am ok so long they do well in house work, take care the house and work for us 'whole heartedly' - My maid very lazy, never clean well, always cook same old dishes. Fresh Veg, left over leave in the fridge to rot. Somethime i said her she will said don't want to work for me! So damp angry! Feel like fire her straight but, am working, I depend on her to bring my kids back from CC and cook dinner.
