I’d even never heard of such a term before that incident. Must have been terrfying although I was not there to witness it. My panicky mum had to tell me what happened at that time. More like screaming at me, "He’s unconscious! He can’t wake up! HOW? HOW? Oh dear oh dear! Quick, help!" In my anxiety, I tried calling 911 (not 991 as mentioned…sorry) Imagine that! I had even forgotten the correct emergency number to call. In all that excitement, my mom and maid hopped barefooted onto the ambulance with my boy. After everything had settled down, I realised that my second unborn baby could have been placed in danger, with all my running around and driving like crazy. Phew. Thank God. Also kudos to the paramedics. They worked fast in getting my boy to the hospital and did a good job calming everyone down. And please, dear parents, if you ever see an ambulance on the road with the sirens wailing, PLEASE give way. Every second can make a difference between life and death for the victim.

This only happened recently.

A unmarried friend in her mid 30’s suddenly got pregnant and actually gave birth. When she discovered the pregnancy, she was well into her 30 weeks and already broke up with the man who made her pregnant months ago. Don’t ask me why she didn’t know. She had irregular period and mistook baby’s movement as cancer growth? She procastinated against seeing a doctor.

So when doc told her to go for a scan, she realised she had a baby. She had given birth and fortunately baby is fine. Imagine the flu meds and lack of prenatal care during this period.

Also imagine the emotional burden she had to face as the man is not going to be responsible. In any case, he is the wrong man and not the type you should marry for the sake of marrying. On top of that, the stigma of being a single mum and telling people around you that you have a child. The financial burden ahead. So I supposed she must be very brave to weather all that. It’s definitely not a situation where one seeks to be in.

Think we were all in our early to mid 20s. We were heading to some look out point and the drive was up a windy hill, single lane up and down. There was another car ahead of us and it was moving real slow and jamming brakes all the time. That irritated us and when the opportunity came, I overtook them. 20+ and gungho, when we passed them, we kinda razz them as well. Big mistake. When I next look at the rear view mirror, I saw that car barrelling towards our car, I had no choice but to speed up and they kept up. Told everyone to buckle up. A friend turned around to peer through the rear to see what they were up to and saw one of them flashing a knife at her. I thought I could slow down to let pass but they slowed as well up kept tailgating and then the horning and shouting started. They shouted for us to stop and get out of our car. My frens kept chanting dun stop dun stop keep moving. So I drove on, until we came across a small cafe/bar. I turned immediately into that place and leaned on my horn until the people from the cafe came out. The thugs from the other car, hung around awhile but seeing that there are others around they drove off. Needless to say, we did not go to the look out and the owner of the cafe very kindly escorted us down the hill in her pickup.

About 2 years back, I was pregnant with my second child and had to undergo a test at TMC when my mom called me to ask how things were. She let my firstborn son say hello to me. Next minute, she was screaming and screaming hysterically saying my son had fainted and could not be roused. She thought he had a heart attack.

Imagine my shock. I was shaking so hard and crying. Almost called 991, then called 999. Then told to call 995. Then I ran like mad, clutching my stomach, to the carpark, drove towards home, then changed my mind and rushed straight to KKH’S A&E where the paramedics were taking my son to. Was weeping and praying so hard for son to be ok while driving. Turned out son had a febrile fit. To this day, I will never forget those feelings of fear, desperation and utter helplessness.

And all the recent tragic cases of seemingly healthy young boys collapsing while jogging, running, playing basketball…such grief their families must be going through.

Not once, but twice, when I was sitting in my primary school bus, I saw legs sticking out from under the police tent at the foot of the apartments (I remember Lake View and the other one was at Farrer). One of the fallen victims was a young girl. My friends and I were swinging on the handrail like monkeys when we saw those legs. We were so scared, we stopped playing in the bus for a few days.

Sometimes when I look up at all the new modern condos and see the open balconies I wonder whether there are kids in the units up there and fear for their safety. Reached for the shower head to prepare for a rinse-off when something jumped onto my neck. I couldn’t see what it was exactly (very high degrees so super blind), screamed, crashed out of the shower cubicle and slipped and fell. Turned out that the pervert was a fat polka-dotted lizard. Really dislike these lizards. Especially when they make the ‘kekeke’ sound.
