Meaning do all secondary schools offer MTL B  (foundation) or only selected schools? Thanks

Students in Exp and N(A) courses may offer MTL ‘B’ if they meet the following criteria at Sec 1 under AL system:
• AL 7 or 8 in Standard MTL or
• AL B or C in Foundation MTL

Schools will have discretion to offer MTL ‘B’ to students who face exceptional difficulty with MTL but do not meet the eligibility criteria at S1 based on PSLE results.

Beyond Sec 1, as students’ progress on in their Sec schools, they can also take up MTL ‘B’ if they are assessed to be suitable by their schools.

Students eligible for MTL ‘B’ will be able to offer MTL ‘B’ at the beginning of the school year. As not all Sec schools offer the MTL 'B' courses, the students will have to study MTL ‘B’ at a centre (MOE Language Centre or other Sec schools that offer the course) of their choice outside curriculum time.

Similarly, there's MTL ‘B’ (2 yr course) in JC but not all JCs offer it.

On a side note, MTL ‘B’ will be discontinued from the 2024 Sec 1 cohort, when full subject-based banding kicks in.

I doubt the bar is as high as AL6.

Based on what I see at MOE website regarding the AL system, those kids who are streamed to NA stream (based on total AL score), if they score AL5 and better for MTL, they can do Express level for MTL in Sec 1. If they score AL6 or worse, it seems that they will just do NA level for MTL (rather than syllabus B, which is 1 level simpler than NA MTL).

For those kids who are streamed to Express stream (based on total AL score), it seems that they will (by default) do Express MTL, even if the MTL was AL6 or worse? Maybe end of Sec 1 they’ll be assessed again for better accuracy.

I'm not sure how one qualifies for MTL B in Sec 1. The info on MOE website only talks about Sec 3 admissions. Maybe check with some specific schools.

There is a MTL B in JC and the uni requirement is just a pass.

Note, this year's PSLE kids (2022 PSLE) will be the last kids offered MTL B. 2024 Sec 1s will have G1, G2, G3 option, although I'm not sure where the cutoff points are (i.e. what PSLE AL score is eligible for G1, G2, G3).

To add on - there is a JC MTL \"B\" syllabus, but I'm not sure all JCs offer this. One of my daughters attended these classes in MI.

“Merit” and “Pass” grades for the Mother Tongue ‘B’ Syllabus (viz. Chinese ‘B’, Malay ‘B’ and Tamil ‘B’) cannot be used for the computation of aggregate points for admission to a Junior College (JC), Millennia Institute (MI), Polytechnic (Poly) or Institute of Technical Education (ITE) courses

The L1R5 does not require chinese language to be counted in.

From what I gather from teachers, you will need at least a pass in CLB to be able to qualify for JC if your grades qualify you for JC.

May I know if a pass is also required for CLB to be able to make it for Millenia Institute?
