All About Teaching Mathematics

There are so many different methods of teaching maths. can someone enlightment me the full range of methods?? very confused leh...
These are some:
Heuristic ??? (what is this?)
Unit transfer
Model
and what else?? :?
I am confused as well.
Could you also post examples of some questions with the methods of each to use to solve them?
and primary what can use which methods? last time, I know if the kid understand algebra, he/she is not allowed to use algebra in primary school, but not sure now. goodness, now maths not easy.

During my time, there is one method that can be used to solve almost all word problems. That is algebra. Don’t know when it all started, but I come into contact with heuristic methods when my eldest DS was in P3. He is now in Sec 1.
Heuristc method consist of primarily 5 methods to solve word problems. They are namely, model, guess and check, listing, pattern, working backwards. There maybe more, but these are the 5 common ones.
Unit Transfer Method as I have analysed is just a different word coined. Its approach is similar to ratio method which children will be taught in P5. The difference is only in presentation. I personally do not like the unit transfer method because it confuse some students. It confused my two DS as they are used to the way solution is to be presented as taught by their school.
I would recommend children to stick to heuristic method taught by the school. It is a method familiar to the child, reinforced constantly in school. In particular the model method is amazing. Recently I read an article from my younger DS tuition centre, it wrote that model method is suppose to help the child to understand. If it confuses the child, the problem lies with the trainer and not the child. The model method is a uniquely Singapore math apparently. Do a search on youtube and you will know what I mean.
Algebra concepts is applicable to P5 and P6. I spoke to my DS math HOD, she say it is not that algebra is not acceptable, its just that for a child to solve complex word problem using algebra it require the child to have a good knowledge in algebra. Most children at primary school would not be able to achieve that level of algebra knowledge required. It seems like given the options, MOE choose the heuristic method over algebra.
So, does it mean that if a child uses algebra during exams or PSLE, it will not be accepted? Thanks.

so you can use any kind of method to solve math problem as long as you know how to use it right? or, certain standard can only use certain method?
do the teacher penalise student for using method which he/she has NOT learn before in school? say, this student learn unit transfer at the tuition centre but has not learn thi in school yet (maybe next level), would the school penalise him??

Hi,
My friend's friend who is a teacher and ever marked PSLE papers before, shared that they give marks if the pupils use algebra. And they don't give marks for model, only the workings.
ZY_Mom:
when they give marks for algebraworked solutions...do they only give marks for correct answers or they also give marks for workings (eg if the answer wrong because of carelessness etc, but the structure of some parts of the algebra is correct)?Miracle Child:

Original Title: Any ideal that how Math should be taught.
Hi,
Anyone know how Math should be taught. I sent my daughter to Math group tuition in two different centre. The first centre which I was very disappointed. I sent there about half a year then I realised that the tutor is not good at Math. They claim to be exteacher in good school. My daughter did not understand the question for the school work . I ask her to bring back to tutor to explain to her. Oh no, the tutor explain to her in different working method and worst is the answer is different for the two questions. I can't believe it.
Therefore, I withdraw her from the tuition centre and change to another home tuition. I just let her try a few lesson only. How can I know whether it is a correct tutor to choose? She told the students to do the assessment book only. Is this the way to teach Math? Anyone sent their children to tuition centre or home tuition. How do they teach? Appreciate for feedback. Thank you
