After that, she started feeling sleepy and kept sleeping. She vomitted after eating. She was brought to KK hospital specialist 1 week ago and they feel that she just had bloated stomach.

Until the day before, she rarely waked up again. My sister quickly brought her to the hospital. Without making sufficient examnination, they concluded that she has Meningitis.

My sis discovered that the child is getting jaundice and the eye is starting to turn yellowish. After alerting the doctor to do a check relating to this symptom (what irony, non doctor have to teach doctor what to do?), they now concluded that her liver is significantly damaged and ammonia level in the blood is extremely high (an indication of damage liver). Shouldn’t they have checked the ammonia level in the blood in the first day of admission?

Does anyone here have any such experience with child? What is the best that we can do?

First, she got hand foot mouth disease but her fever recovered within 1-2 days. The paracetamol which the doctor prescribed was well within tolerated dosage and both NUH (KKH also) have ruled out that it is due to panadol toxicity. After her hand-foot-mouth disease recovered, she looked tired which is normal (after hfmd). Nobody will suspect that something is wrong. Even the GP didn't expect anything. In very short time, she started to vomit after taking food and after that she was even more tired and slept for the entire day. that was the last sign we notice and we admitted her to the hospital the following day when she continued to sleep. At the time, when she was admitted, the skin started to turn slightly jaundiced which even the KKH doctor didn't notice initially.

WeiHan

Reply to 3 Year Old Niece In ICU (Hospitalised) on Wed, 02 May 2012 01:52:02 GMT

Great News Weihan!

Echo Mad scientist's sentiments ...

MadScientist:
Read this thread with heart wrenched...

Am so glad to read at the end that things are fine now. The team was led by Prof Prabhakaran and Prof Quak who have done an excellent job. The members surgeons in the team were so confident with Prof Prabhakaran that they assured my sister she will definitely be impressed once we met him and indeed we are.

My niece maybe discharged from the hospital soon. Everything go well except that her bile duct maybe partially blocked or swollen, but it is nothing serious compare to her previous condition.

I also have liver problems and was at the ICU at NUH. My illness was so bad that I was at the edge of death. I was at the ICU for don’t know how many days and thanks to the top doctors, they managed to pull me back. 1 packet of blood was tranfused to me after I was out of the ICU.

To this day, I still want to thank the person whom I got the blood from and I even thought of donating my blood to the blood bank but I don’t think I can, based on my current condition. I still go for CT scans for my liver and is on medictaion. Other than that, I’m quite ok.My thanks to the top doctors, a nurse who has become friends and the dietian looking after me.

The transplant cost at Gleneagle will be $300K while it is about $100K before government subsidies at NUH. As for experience, NUH team seems to be have more experienced with children from 12months old to a few years old.

I’ve checked with my friend who’s a doctor. She says that the transplant is a good option to take. As your niece is very young, she will need only a small portion of liver from one of her parents and her liver will be able to grow again. It’s a major op and there are a number of risks, but some patients do very well.

As for the choice of surgeon, if you need more opinions, you can try looking for Dr KC Tan. He did the liver transplant for Andrea De Cruz in 2002.

The NUH transplant team is good as well and is led by Prof Prabha.
