In general, 结构 is 50% and 内容 is 50%.Both are important. A good compo must be 结构完整,内容丰富.

As for 错字, usually there is a cap for points to be deducted due to 错字. That means even there are, say, 30错字 in a compo, maximum mark the teacher to deduct is only 4 or 5 marks. However that being said, you would have to know a compo with 30错字 will not be a good compo and there is no way to score a high mark:-), and too many 错字 will defenitely impact the flow of the idea and pupils’ confidence when they write the compo. So my suggestion is 错字 is an problem that you have to resolve despite the max marks to be deducted.

If you child has the problem, the best way to help him/her is to practise. Once he/she comes across a 错字 or a character he/she does not know how to write, find it in dictionary, and practice it at least 5 times. Do not just leave it there and think it is OK as he/she can always fall back to dictionary. Must practice. Gradually you child will memorize the strokes and build up ‘vocab’. He/she will be more confident then.

For instance, other than 内容/语文表达/语文结构, is there any maximum mark that the teacher is allowed to deduct for 错字 in the passage.

First of all, we need to note such questions are only few, especially in Normal Chinese paper. Higher Chinese may have a few more though. In past year PSLE Chinese papers, you can find maximum 1 such question. We still need to stress to our pupil for majority of compre questions, they have to find info/answers from the passage. Remember - reading comprehension is to test comprehension skills based on passage reading, rather than the skills to express/phrase your own opinion/views.

Having said that, if pupils do encounter this type of question that they need to give their own opinion, reasonable inference is very important. They need to figure out what the passage implies, rather than just come up with their own ideas. - This is extremely important for reading comprehension.

Another thing to take note of is, most of the time, such question does not have so-called ‘standard answer’. For e.g. question is “你认为他这样做对不对? 为什么?” usually answer can be Yes or No. The key is to give good reasoning to support your answer.

Hope this answers your questions.

Great_Minds

Reply to Having difficulties on Chinese Compre and Compo-P5/P6? on Mon, 14 May 2012 00:47:38 GMT

Hi Great-Minds,

Thanks for starting this thread that is focused on scoring well in CL Compo & Compre. I wonder if you can offer guidance to help the children in their attempts to write their responses to the typical last question in the Compre open-ended question. Some examples are as follows:-

•\t你认为结果会怎样?
•\t你认为他们应该如何相处?
•\t你认为作者做得对不对?
•\t如果是你, 你会怎么做?
•\t你对作者解决问题/困难的方式有什么看法?
•\t除了文中提到的以外,你认为X还有什么地方值得我们学习?

Having a wealth of vocab will certainly help, but most children may also lack the confidence in putting responses in their own words. How can parents help them overcome this problem? Is there any generic and/or “standard” responses that the children can pick up?

Thanks.

Why I say that? Because for primary Chinese compo, the requirement is just to write a narrative (记叙文）.Therefore the skills required for a 看图作文 or 命题作文 are actaully the same. For either 看图作文 or 命题作文, you need to have the skills to write a good narrative. In other words, you have to tell the story well with various parts complete including 开头(beginning of the story)，发展(development of the story)，高潮(climax of the story)，结尾(ending)

Tell you dd/ds if he/she has a good story (from his/her own experience or read from somewhere) which matchs the 命题作文 well, then just try the 命题作文.
