that meal worm thing is definitely my daughter's idea.

attending to both of them, school work and housework is definitely keeping me busy enough...so, i will not buy any pets (be it 2 legs, 4 legs, many legs) NO WAY !!!
When DD was in P3 she also told us she needed to get mealworms to observe their life cycle and record it. Not a must do but a good to do. The cost was not that big an issue but finding it was. Had to find shops that sell birds to get the mealworms.

My younger child brought home a caterpillar from school. She was told by her teacher to feed the caterpillar with leaves from lime plant and it turned into a beautiful butterfly after some time. My younger child was really happy!


Perhaps check with the teacher what leaves to feed the caterpillars with.

Supposed to clear the poo but I usually just leave it, cos I am afraid of worms and no one wants to clean them. The smell is probably from the poo and the secretion. Although I read that you’ll need to place a stick/branch for them to cling on, I realized none of mine do it on the branch… Usually they are at the base of my tank, so I stopped putting in the stick.

How did you come to the conclusion that it died? The very first time we tried, we waited very very long for the butterfly to emerge.. In the end, my mil thinking it was a goner threw it away... The next one, we waited longer.. Then one fine day, it just did.. We had a beautiful butterfly. Then on, we had many more.

Our experience.. The very first one, ate a lot for 2 days...pooped a lot.. Then it stopped growing, in fact shrunk and then laid there in its brown cocoon stage for a long long time.
My subsequent ones, they turned into the cocoon stage very soon and usually emerged after abt 2 weeks or so.

Maybe you should just wait and wait and wait.
i thought it died because there was a smell.

my caterpillars pooped A LOT too. it stayed in the green cocoon stage for several days. you mean they emerge after 2 weeks ? oh dear, then i really should have waited :stupid:

my ds is average student in a good class n good school. His biggest weakness is \"lazy to read thoroughly\"?? I realise he did a lot of careless mistakes in his SA1,either he didn't read the questions carefully,or he didn't able to \"read btw the lines\".

So this is the best time to refresh all the topics, re-emphasis the key answer techniques,train his thinking process...

for languages,i get him to practise comprehension(mcq n open-ended)alternate days.Do at least one compo (either chinese/english)per day.

For science,go thru flow charts n key words(since i oredi done revisions prior to SA1),get him to do few pages of OE questions each topic.We oso do \"experiments\" at home,using plants,insects,materials,breads...etc....to foster his understandings.In btw,i intro term 3 new topics to him.

i bring them out for jogging,swimming,strolling,cycling....though there is no \"me\" time,i enjoy every moment i spend wf them...knowing that they grow up fast...

We did plant transport system and bread experiments last weekend. What insects and materials experiments did you do? I found DS science concept understanding is much better after we did experiments so I plan to do more experiments this holiday 😄

Working parents have to moonlight as teachers. Tough! Can have their own time only after the kids sleep....

I wouldn't call it moonlight...coaching.

My hubby is sole breadwinner. I am the maid-disciplinarian-cook...basically run the operations. By the time kids sleep, it is close to midnight bcos there is revision...kids take a nap after school or else nothing can be done.

I was just lamenting in FB that holidays are NO fun...and NO 'me time'.

Sigh. You know something is wrong when not just parents, but even TEACHERS, have problem solving some of the questions. When I used to teach (in a top 30 school, no less), I remember teachers scratching their heads and brain-storming the solution of some Math questions.

Not everyone is good at maths.

Maybe those qns are not important. As in dont need to know how to solve them if not thinking of IP schools.

I'm thinking now how much time do I want to waste my kids' time on those qns :evil: I'm not interested in OM, so I'm having thoughts of maybe some maths qns are not important to solve. LOL. I will see how when dd1 is in upper level.

I'm very tempted to decide not to waste any time on them if they are no mathematically inclined.

I understand that there are limited vacancies in the IP schools so such problems must exist to sieve the kids out to determine who can make it to those schools. We must have kids who are able to solve those qns so that they can bring glory to Singapore in terms of academic achievements.
