Wanted to tell you that there could be other non life-threatening reasons for heart murmurs.

I have a mitral valve prolapse.
http://www.medicinenet.com/mitral_valve_prolapse/article.htm

In my case, it's not serious, but it can get annoying because I suddenly have a very fast beating heart. Is this the condition your hubby has, ksi? In my case, no-one's tried to womp me in the chest or back, so I don't know if that works :). But it does settle itself. Often times, it's just an irregular heartbeat that I can feel. The condition also makes me a bit jumpy, as in, I get startled easily by sudden movement or loud sounds. I can't even flush the toilet on board the plane without covering my ears because of the suddenly loud sound that will happen within an enclosed space!

I was on medication before to regulate the heartbeat, but it doesn't have any long term positive effects, so I stopped. The doc says I'm as healthy as the next person, and within my family, no-one has had any heart disease, so I'm hopeful I'm fine. The only precaution is to not exercise excessively.

The most interesting, holistic prognosis of the symptoms was given by a Chinese sinseh. I had gone there for a torn ligament and he detected the prolapse from listening to my \"mai\". He asked if I was startled easily, and if I wake up from scary dreams in the early hours of the morning - all spot on! Apparently, my heart condition causes these symptoms and not vice versa.

Perhaps the best thing you can do is to study your family history as heart conditions are likely to be hereditary. In the meanwhile, make sure your son is not overly active and has plenty of rest.

Best wishes!

Blobbi

Reply to Vomitted, murmur and Hole in the Heart on Mon, 10 May 2010 13:40:45 GMT

ksi:
My MIL and my DH(inherited from her??) have some kind of sound in their hearts but it does not seem to affect them except for my DH's case, he gets an occasion attack.

The attack is a sudden increase in the speed of rhythm of the heart and at standing position, he would look like he has run a few 400m around the stadium. As Jenniferjoey mentioned, it depends on the site, size etc. Some holes close spontaneously as the child grows. Some adults live with it without any problems throughout their lifespan.
On the other hand, I have seen children and adults who have undergone surgery and do well so there is really a spectrum of conditions. If you are still looking for an opinion, you can look for A/Prof Wong Keng Yeen, a nice and very experienced Paediatric Cardiologist at KKH.
I can understand your anxiety as my child was diagnosed with a heart defect at birth and I remembered almost breaking down in tears worrying what if my fragile little baby needed surgery. Kid went through the process of investigations -echocardiography( non- invasive), over a few years and he is pronounced to be treated like 'normal', even with the defect still present. I just found out that I have a 'hole in the heart' too sometime last year and I have lived through half my life not realising it!

ksmama

Reply to Vomitted, murmur and Hole in the Heart on Tue, 09 Jun 2009 16:18:40 GMT

Hi Chief,

It's nothing at all, actually with a word or a sentence that can bring comforts or helps to people, in return bring joy back to people who offers. They varies from tiny defects, of pinhole size, to huge defects.

I found this website describe about ASD & VSD quite well with diagrams. Do take a look for better understanding.

http://www.daviddarling.info/encyclopedia/H/hole_in_the_heart.html#symptoms

Have you just found out about this defects by GP or Specialist? Please get to see a specialist asap and get all the examinations like Chest Xrays, Electrocardiogram(ECG) and so on done. If surgery/procedure is needed, get it done as early as possible unless it's neonate which other complications may be taken into consideration. Further delay may cause more complications. Suggest you go SGH or NUH if you haven't have anywhere to go yet.

For vomiting may or may not be related to the defects of the heart must be aware of the contents, colours and smell of the vomitus and diarrhoea. Take down the number of times, description and the amount if possible. Must not let your child get dehydrated. Most likely needed to be hospitalised for all the symptoms given.

If you do need helps /medical advices / any doubts that you are uncertain, you can email me at <jenniferjoey>, you are not alone, you can bring up your queries/complaints/anything to everyone here.

You take very good care of your own health too. Don’t know how serious and frequent it is for the case you were referring to, but if there is nothing more serious detected, it should slowly ease off with a combination of good hygiene habit and as the child immune system gets stronger.
