I grew up in a HDB, the neighbours were great, it was really convenient, bus stop just downstairs, coffeeshops across the carpark, market and MRT just 10mins walk away. Then I moved out into a small condo, again, the neighbours were really nice, a few of us will always gather at the fountain near the entrance to chat after walking our dogs and the environment really peaceful. Not as convenient as a HDB but I hate crowd and I prefer quiet so it worked for me. We used the facilities pretty frequently.

Next, bought a HDB, really convenient as there was a coffeeshop just 1 block away, some convenient stores as well. Neighbours kept pretty much to themselves, we were seldom home as well since there was nothing to do at home. Car got scratched twice. There was always some people hanging around the void deck smoking or drinking.

Now we are living in another condo. Again, not as convenient but that is me again, I prefer my residence to be away from the hustle and bustle of traffic, be it vehicle or people. Facilities, we use the pool and the playground very often, daily actually, cos of the kids. Our kids are free to roam round the estate. Our neighbours so far have been pretty decent. Our unit is like the gathering place for all the kids in the estate.

DH and I did talk about cashing in and buying a HDB/upgrading to a landed but scrapped the idea as the pools and the playgrounds are very important for us. Keep the kids from driving us nuts. Maybe when they are older.

Complaints to mgt office...quick sorted out.

Just sharing my own experience.

When I stayed in condo, after a while, we hardly used the pool, gym, sauna, tennis courts... We had never used the barbeque pits. Booking the function rooms was also a nightmare. One had to queue from 7am outside the Management Office. I often chose to book country club function rooms and pay more to get waiters to help out. Though it was a penthouse (the largest we could find in that corner of Singapore), I actually had to throw away furniture which previously fit easily into my old HDB flat. The penthouse was marketed at 2800 sq ft but actual living areas was about 1500 sq ft. A large amount of the space went to aircon ledges and roof terrace gardens.

The HDB flat was a very short 2 minute walk to provision shops, TCM Halls, doctors' clinics... 5 minutes' walk to a park... 5 playgrounds within a radius of 1km (2 of which were 5 minutes walk away). The HDB Town Council was responsive (but that was years ago). I never had salesmen knocking on my doors. At no time did we experience people throwing faeces from above. Indeed, when our rabbit pooped in the corridor, I received a Town Council warning within 7 days of placing my rabbit outside. MIL stayed in the opposite block. Town Council responded to her call to remove heavy furniture within 1 day... and the leaks in her old flat was also nicely repaired.

In contrast, it took 12 months before the leaks in my penthouse roof were properly repaired. AND we made a 200% profit when we sold the HDB... something we never experienced with the condos we bought because these were priced high to begin with.

But I do realize I speak of times past. HDB flats these days are priced high too, especially the DBSS and BTO... and they're just as small as condos. Still, I would prefer an old HDB flat with no swimming pool to a shoebox anytime.

http://petunialee.blogspot.com/2011/08/fond-memories-of-hdb-flat.html

Chenonceau

Reply to KBW:HDB flat Sizes remained unchanged for past 15 years on Mon, 07 May 2012 01:20:33 GMT

fightingmom:

]

Sorry, I could be :offtopic: here but just want to share an experience of my gf:

She used to stay in a condo ground floor unit with patio. Dislike the dirty lift lobby and void deck. Always have stickers, flyers on door attracting unwanted attention when away. Always got sales person knocking on doors. Complaints to town council....takes a long time to respond and mostly of no help.

Buy condo - got swimming pool, BBQ pit, function so very good. Easier to make a quick buck (hm.......).
